Wesnoth uses UTF-8 encoding, which supports the russian character set.

However, we don't have a russian translation yet, and the default font does not support russian characters (The Bepa font, another fot included in the game, and used for other traductions, does, however).

If you're interested in the russian translation of the game, I suggest you go to the following topic.

However, there seems to be some confusion on whether or not the Bepa font will/can be used with gettextization. See http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2819

Believe me, it will be used. A lot of other languages depend on it, and already use it.

If you use Bepa and UTF-8, there should be no problem. Just begin translating, and if something is wrong... ask here.

Since I posted this, the gettext developers have let us know HOW to use the other font:

string into the correct filename." -- http://wesnoth.slack.it/?GetText

Well, that's nice. :D So I hope to see the Russian translation soon. I wish to try some non-Latin translation.

I replied here mostly because I was confused by the "Russian translation" discussion -- it seemed to me that translators are discussing whether the font supports Russian letters or not. It does (at least I think so; if not, please tell me). It already did half year ago. Before the switch to PO files was made, the CFG files supported font Bepa, and some languages (Slovak, Czech) have actually used it. So it seems to me that there is no problem -- except maybe a very short period of chaos recently, while switching to gettext -- and I did not understand the pattern of discussion, first complaining about font, then silence. I know this is the free project, and every volunteer works at his/her own speed, but IMHO half year is enough for a sample of translation.

Don't expect anyone else to do it for you. If you want it, you better start working on it - or kicking some other people do it for you =)

That's far beyond my (a) ability and (b) free time. I'll rather stay with the "expecting". Just wanted to make sure that there are no problems with font, in case someone else would start translating.
