Re: Skeletal Pirate Art Hoard (ARR!)
It's also used to secure ropes on a sailing vessel.
Re: Skeletal Pirate Art Hoard (ARR!)
and obviously it's not recognised as such at the scale of pixel art.
It might be worth considering something different. There are enough cool pirate weapons to pick from

Re: Skeletal Pirate Art Hoard (ARR!)
A belaying pin is, shockingly enough, for belaying. That is to say, making ropes fast. On modern ships, they're usually made of stainless steel. And are very heavy, and would make effective weapons. Trust, me, I've sailed on a tall ship on a number of occasions.
Other cool (and often makeshift) pirate weapons would have included marlin spikes (used for loosening tight knots and splicing ropes, these were BIG metal spikes. Heavy for clubbing people, pointy for shanking people. Also various boarding pikes, small cannons, longshoremans' hooks, etc etc etc. Just about anything heavy enough to hit someone with and not tied down was fair game

There's people out there that will see anything roughly cylindrical as extremely phallic. I'm not worried about it, logic should kick in for most people: "so he's a pirate and he's carrying a wooden cylindrical object which he uses to hit people with, it must be a club of some sort". Also, if they bothered to actually read the thread/description/attacks they'd know exactly what kind of club it is.Boucman wrote:and obviously it's not recognised as such at the scale of pixel art.

Woodmouse, seriously.

I might want to extend the handle a little more just to look more like an actual belaying pin though, i did the original without using reference.
You won't be hearing much from me on this for a bit, i'm working on finishing up shadows for mainline. Dern woses.

Re: Skeletal Pirate Art Hoard (ARR!)
Hey guys, has anyone asked about creating a campaign with these totally sweet sprites? I'd love to try my hand at it. I looked at the thread, but couldn't find any other offers of campaign-creation. Or is it too soon to ask about this?

Re: Skeletal Pirate Art Hoard (ARR!)
Yeah, nobody did ask yet, IIRC, but i think someone would pick it up once all the sprites were done. I'm kinda on hiatus right now, so the sprites won't be done for a while. If you still want to use them when i get around to finishing them, great.artisticdude wrote:Hey guys, has anyone asked about creating a campaign with these totally sweet sprites? A word of advice though: before you post in a thread, read the date on the last post in it.

Yarr, finally got around to doing the lvl 1 for the swashbuckler.
Unlike the majority of his piratical peers, he be mostly from scratch. (Ok fine, about half of him is from scratch)

Hi! Long time lurker, first time poster here.
Those are some sweet sprites.
I wanted to practice drawing, so I made this portrait sketch of the bone-pirate from your first post.
It's a WIP but I thought I'd post it anyway.
c&c appreciated!

Re: Skeletal Pirate Art Hoard (ARR!)
Ok the facial expression idea is good, but there are quite a few issues with bone size. He doesn't have enough ribs, no trace f a collarbone, jaw a bit too wide, those are some starter things. Skeletons are hard to draw, I've not yet got the skill to do them myself, but this is really good!

Thanks for the pointers.Frogger5 wrote:Ok the facial expression idea is good, but there are quite a few issues with bone size. He doesn't have enough ribs, no trace f a collarbone, jaw a bit too wide, those are some starter things
Yeah, I know the collarbone's missing. Will fix that and the other stuff.
I am going to look at more reference pictures and also Valkier's work when it comes to (try to) follow the Wesnoth art style.
Re: Skeletal Pirate Art Hoard (ARR!)
Is this utilized somewhere? I am looking for unit files I could use and an art folder I could copy.
Re: Skeletal Pirate Art Hoard (ARR!)
I'd like to use the images for strange legacy. I created encounters onboard a ship, where pirates, nagas or other creatures attack. I'd love to add undead pirates.
May I use the these images? I have already created unit definitions based on skeletons. I can provide them, just in case.

Embedded an undead pirate faction in Strange Legacy using your pictures, thanks for providing them.
