Updated oldies!

Post by West »

You know what they say, better late than never. So, a couple of updates:

Breaking the Chains
Legends of the North

I bet you didn't see that one coming :)

LotN is now actually finished (gasp!), BtC uses some percussion loops (GASP!), there's a nicer reverb and generally a bit better sound quality. And if you wonder what's going on, I'm busy polishing up some old tunes for a Jamendo release and figured I should post the updated tracks here first.

They're as finished as they're ever going to get, feel free to commit them. Unless I contract George Lucas Syndrome and decide to fix them up again ten years from now, I'm not touching these tracks again. :)

There was a discussion some time ago about posting lossless FLAC files. Will these be available?

Committed to SVN trunk, which means the changes will be included in the next 1.7.x release.

West, I think these are great. I like the idea of updating old songs as technology and our libraries expand, however in 'Breaking the Chains' I still prefer this harp line:

to this one:

But that's just my opinion, I think the old version is more memorable and melodic. It seems more rennaissance to me, where as if you want to get technical, I don't think the sharp 6 in the minor scale (dorian mode) was availble yet. :D

I guess you should then remove the line in the FAQ that says that a piece that uses loops is not orchestral music. :D I always thought that line was quite dogmatic, although I sort of understand why it is there.

I don't have time now to listen to this carefully, but I intend to do it later and tell you my opinion.

Touché :D

I see what you mean, but there's loops, and then there's loops. I've said on several occasions that using percussion loops is fine, as long as it's done tastefully. Putting together entire songs from prefab orchestral loops, OTOH, is something completely different, and that's what we do not allow.

MIDIfab loops = Loops that you make using MIDI notes.
