And done. 'm off to the next one

Zigg : "Why not just work that fast anyway" is easy enough to write, however it strongly relies on hazardous assumptions such as :
- a) Release 1.8 not being scheduled the day after tomorrow (is it ? it could be, for all I know)
- b) Me not having to spend 5 out of 7 days at work
- c) The "minimum required to replace existing portraits" not being 6 portraits
- d) In-game replacement of said existing portrait not involving any developers
-...
Many variables, among which I really have control over one only : my own working speed. :annoyed:

Now a side note on blue shadows : the way I (and the game) picture them, orcs are creatures of the night. As such, I want their portraits to have lightsources dimmer than the loys', as if they were only ever seen at dusk. I also plan to add these bluish shadows in order to suggest the eerie glow of moonlight and the depths of the night they dwell in. I like the result and I plan this to become a trademark atmosphere of the orc series. I might tone it down so as to not fall in a comic book colour range, but in the end there will be blue.

Sweet. I like the "night" colors.

BTW, the devs on IRC were toying with the idea of releasing 1.7.8 this weekend to test the new MP lobby. If they go through with that plan, it should mean you've still got a while until 1.8 comes out.

In theory, yes. But in practice, motivation to work might be higher.

afaik there is one blocker on the mp lobby side... once it's fix 1.7.8 will be released as 1.8-beta, 1.8 should be one week later according to plans..

that is short indeed for 6 portraits, so LordBob, my advice would be not to rush. better to have great portraits a bit later.

Work in progress for the third grunt

Boucman: keeping in mind how every orc portrait already has its lines & flats, I think I might be able to work surprisingly fast.
Here's what I think I have to (and likely can) pull off within a week or so :
- 4 grunt line portraits (2 are already done and the third's well underway)
- orc assassin portrait

Unless I've missed anything major in the Wesnoth package, this should cover most dialog situations orcs ever get.

It's so cool to see your orcs finally comming to life! :D

Orc_2 has rally a lot of character! At first glance I was a bit confused by his silhouette - I read the sheath as kind of a tail with its colour being very close to the trousers and all. If it was more of the reddish or metallic kind you could get rid of that impression.

Orc_3 seems really smug! The texture and strains on his cloak look great! Taking into consideration how hairy this guy is overally I'd expext a bunch of armit hair as well - it wouldn't seem likely that he would shave only this of all places :P

And I noticed that you decided to give all of them very similar skincolour (and I really like this muted yellowish tint) - but keep Jetrel's original description in mind: orcs have skin ranging in color from pale to dark. They aren't an uniform race at all.

Zigg - LordBob labeled this a work in progress for a reason... If you look closely the helmet is barely shaded at all at this stage. Please keep such unhelpful comments to yourself or at least add something nice as well.

LordBob,

These look great, I just have one question. Might the throat of orc_grunt_2 need to be darker/shadowed, just to make it more clear that it is in a different plane than the face?

Last tweaks on grunt #2, including throat shadow and scabbard colour tone.
I think he's ready for commitment.

Seconded.
On a much lighter note, one of the orcs (the grunt with both fists clenched) looks like he should plunder a pharmacy next time, for some fiber supplements and such stuff  I'd imagine a raging posture one provocation before the fight to be the exact opposite: stretching up, chin up and pushing the chest out to look bigger 'n badder instead of hunching down, even if it is the natural stance for him. Or is he actually building up muscle tension for the actual attack? I can't quite read his body language. Or is he performing an orcish haka?

On the other hand, Mr "We currently have 18 fingers together, and soon only one head" raising his fist and reaching for the scabbard clearly wants another fight and is looking forward to it. Is there a reason he twists his left hand the way he does? It does not look to me like he'll have a good grip on the scabbard.

He is not reaching for the scabbard, but the hilt. I think you have misinterpreted the 3D position of the hand. The shadows should hint at it.

nice work as always, i really like the stains and rips on orc3, but for some reason it looks like the reason he's holding up his fist is because he's staring at it, instead of past it

Currently working on Siege of Soradoc. Except not anymore, but you can take over if you want!

And there goes Grunt #3.
Introducing some skin tone variation as Kitty suggested.

I'm off to #4 next.
