omgimdead's Sprite(s) in Progress

Post by omgimdead »

Hi, I'm looking to create an era with my friend, so I decided to start small, by creating sprites for one of the factions first. So here it is, a base sprite for the Leorian unit. Ignore the name, I was a little frustrated (: Comments on how and where to improve it would be great!

if you're making art for an existing era, then post it in that era's art thread. also, i suggest starting off by frankensteining, (take a head from one person, a body from another and maybe recolour it all) or editing existing units to suit your needs first. Most factions use mostly frankenstiened units: after all, why make something completely new when people have made very similar things already?

then try making from scratch work. here, i would use the posture of a wolf, change the head to a lions head and then recolour the whole thing.

The back paws are pointing the wrong way, but they look good. the front paws also need an angle adjustment, but the one nearest to us is too big.
There needs to be some shadow, too. look at the shading art tutorial, in the create part of the page. Also, lion's manes go all the way around the face. you made it just look like your lion has hair. Try looking at a refrence. also, the colouring is a bit off.

try moving the ear up a bit so it's not on the side of the head.

overall, i'm surpriesed. i think this is pretty good for a from scratch unit, especially if it's your first sprite.

How does it look now? Added the shadow according to the tutorial, adjusted the claws, and added a little more mane. The mane under the chin would be obscured in this angle.

If you can make sprites this well from scratch already, you probably don't need to try frankensteining. Those claws look really good now!

Problems: The tail looks a bit odd where it connects to the body; you have some stray pixels around the shadow and tail; his front left paw should be a bit more under his head from this angle, I think.

Generally speaking, he seems very orange compared to a real lion and he could definitely use the distinctive white coloring around his muzzle instead of the current muddy gray.

Ok, made the adjustments to the tail, and yeah, he does look better with the white muzzle. Also, I like the left front claw in this position, gives the image of him being more crouched.

I'm also quite lousy with colours, so what colour would you suggest? A more yellowish colour?

If i don't miss my guess, he IS frankensteining. I recognize the body/claws as from the lvl 2 vine tiger from Era of Myths. Some of the vine crap is still left over on it too.

Check out this awesome lion by melon, by the way: linky

I stand corrected. That does look like a frankenstein.

Although megane's (melon's?) lion is pretty good, this one has a much more impressive mane. But you could definitely learn from the other lion's coloring, ears, general definition of muscles, and nose (though megane is missing your white muzzle.)

I did take the body shape from the vine tiger, but everything else was done from scratch. And I don't see what you mean by the vine crap :/

There's weird green lines on the lion in various spots.

Here's the recoloured version, I made the colours a little less bright so it would fit more. Also, I'm kinda red-green colourblind, so are there still any green patches?

There's one going right down the middle of the mane on the left side.

Is the green streak still there? If not, I think I can accept this as the final version of this sprite.

bit overgrown in some places, mainly lower parts of legs too long and fat, head doesn't look very catlike more like a gargoyle, shading..but that can wait till the shape is alright
i believe you could afford bigger spots too, 2 pixel ones, at least on the main body
the main body is alright, neat that you included the the hump between 'arms' and head :)
might expand the loins backward more to cover the butt, it shouldn't be sticking backwards further than legs..well..the base of legs is what makes the butt in fact

overally quite good for a start, now needs polishing
Like cats? I've made a whole faction of them to kick ass with!
Don't like cats? I've made a whole faction of them to kick their asses! So everyone's happy :)
Felinian faction is part of the Beyond Southern Hells era
kitties need sprites! art topic here

How does it look now? Tweaked the ears and eyes, and increased the size of the spots on the body. Are the paws really too large? I think they look fine...
