Re: Items
You mean this, right? I would be happy to fix its flatness, if someone could tell me what exactly it's supposed to be... I've never quite understood, and I don't feel like I can work on something if I don't know what it's based on/what it's for.Jetryl wrote:If you really want to fix something, we could use some work on our stone monolith graphics; they're currently very flat.

It's a menhir/standing stone of some kind.

Re: Items
Shadows are supposed to be tinted blue. Many are not because the sprites are too old. So, if you want to fix things up, you need to go the other way! Re: Items
The shadow under the item is not at issue, the shading of the item is. Personally, I think there's not an awful lot to choose between them...

Re: Items
Indeed, at this point it really just comes down to a matter of preference.

Re: Items
i thought it looked a bit odd for gold but either way it's still pretty good.
I'm not sure if i got this right though are the shadows or shading on sprites in need of tuning up?

Re: Items
The shadows under units are in the process of recieving a new style and colour.

Re: Items
It looks worse than the old one.
Build it up of clear geometric shapes with clear light direction & clear perspective & clear shading of sides.

Re: Items
Okay... I'll try. It's hard because the stones don't have clear geometric shapes - they're very funny shaped. But you're right. My last one was way too smooth. New attempt: EDIT:: Note: this is not a finished version. This is a "you mean more like this?" version.Syntax_Error wrote:Build it up of clear geometric shapes with clear light direction & clear perspective & clear shading of sides.
Re: Items
Indeed, that looks more like stone that has been roughly finished. As I know it is a WIP, what are you going to do for shading on the dark side?

Re: Items
Correct. Shadows that are simply a darker shade of the original tone are generally a rather "noobish" way of shading; they're not taking any color theory into account. They can be correct under certain circumstances, but shadows are generally a slightly different color, because they're illuminated by primarily blue/green reflected light from blue/green grass, rather than yellow light coming from the sun.beetlenaut wrote:Shadows are supposed to be tinted blue. The shadow side of an object is generally always illuminated by a secondary light source. I know it sounds unintuitive, but it's true. If it wasn't, it'd be jet black. If you can see it, there's some light illuminating it.

Is there a specific thread for tuning up shadows?

Re: Items
wouldn't it more often be reflected light than a secondary source? (Although that might be considered a second source, it seems to me like It'd still be the first source, but bounced off of something.) Not that it matters.

Re: Items
It's a secondary light source - what it is exactly usually depends on the environment. It may be the diffuse blue of the sky, more concentrated reflections from nearby objects, that sort of thing.
