Minimum requirements and suggestions

Post by palloco »

I had succesfully installed and run Wesnoth 0.8.1 on a 486 DX4 75 MHz
Specs:
Shuttle HOT-419 486 VL-BUS GREEN MAIN BOARD
16 Mb SIMM RAM
512 Mb HD
1 Mb Chips and Technologies ISA video card Wingine DGX
DIN keyboard
Win 98 SE(this is also a success because w98SE needs 24 Mb to run)
No sound card, no mouse(moving pointer with keyboard :/), no diskette drive, cdrom drive 12X

Although it run extremely slow I had not suffered any problem/crash.
I have some suggestions to improve playability here.
Maybe you will ask me why would you want to make this game playable in such a computer. The reason is because maybe it is possible to run this game in a pda or smart phone, and they dont have better video card than this computer, although they may be faster if you spend many money.
It would be nice to be able to control the game only with keyboard, that is surf the menus with arrow or tab keys and move the units with 789123 in numeric keyboard, this will as well help us, the civilization fans.
640x480 resolution option
Disable animations option: units will appear in the final square. It would also be good that at the beginning when different units talk from all over the map the engine does not scroll through all the map and just appear in the destination(this computer needed 5 seconds to reload map therefore in the first map the presentations of the orc leaders, I spent several minutes waiting my computer to scroll all over the map)
The next is probably not worth to implement: A low quality graphic implementation: Squares represented with colors, no images in the presentation of each map(only a scrollable text), the dialogs in the map will also appear as a scrollable text instead of surfing the map...

Does the game still load sound when you put it at minimun? If not there should be an option to disable sound.

Sorry for the things that had already been suggested, did not want to search every single thing.

It's cool that you could get Wesnoth running on such a low-end machine.

The biggest problem with porting to low-spec devices is resolution. Supporting 800x600 is already a pain. I'd be loathe to support lower resolutions unless it was very beneficial, because it really is painful, and can hamper the game in other areas.

Turn on the "Accelerated Speed" preference (and Skip AI moves) to minimize the amount of scrolling that happens.
Play a Silver Mage in the Wesvoid campaign.

Low res is one thing... I think I see why it's hard to implement 640x480, but disabling animations or something, to reduce memory and cpu usage would be fine...

A friend of mine playing on win98SE has some problems waiting, while windows writes/reads the virtual memory to/from disk...
