Retro Era

Post by kyi_the_bard »

This era is based more on the art of the units than some creative story, so if the sprites below this message completely turns you off, then this era is not for you. How ever, if this peeks your interest, then welcome aboard the...

Right now I know what style I wish to use, I just don't know how I want to use it.

Should I create my own set of factions? Or Retro-ize the mainline factions? Or does this just scream "NO" to everyone but me?

More shall come when I get the opinion of the forum.

(These sprites are 16x16 pixels then magnified x3 so they're see-able.)

I think it might be a pretty decent idea - it reminds me a little of all those retro roguelikes I used to play in ancient times, and it's a little nostalgic (that being said, I don't think that many of the "young players" would be keen on playing it, but the older ones should find it enjoyable).

If you want to make an era with such units, then I suggest to make it without creating remakes of existing factions (similar factions would be good for as long as they're just similar), because that way it would be unique, and there'll be no players who find it easier to play it because of them playing with the fraction you decide to remake...

Bolded: Good, that's what I was going for.

Other: You bring up a point I was border lined on. I'm happy making all new factions, and since I am able to sprite in wesnoth style I could, later on, make a revamped era packed in with it, if people like the factions but can't stand the art work. If I do make my own I still might have to do the default to keep style clashing down. (To bad nothing can be done about terrain)

I like this idea also. I would be interested in seeing both mainline and your originals, however, a retro-mainline revamp (or unvamp?) might take awhile. Perhaps a faction of your own would be best for playing purposes for now? For me, this is nostalgic of my other favorites Warlords I & II. 8)

Then the three factions are:

The Forgotten Magic
This faction consists of magical things not in mainline Wesnoth. You can find missing magic "Classes" such as the witch and bard, but the bulk of this faction are Fairies.

The Mercs
This faction is a blending of many units. They are all very good at what they do, but cost a pretty penny to hire.

The Undergrowth
This is a faction of plant people referred to as "Weeds". They are weak but many, and have many branches in their advancements.

Right now I've hit a bump- I want six base units for each faction, but only have four- but that should fix itself by the end of today.

Can i give some suggestions?

Unit Ideas

The Forgotten Magic
Pixie - Small weak scout with Healing
Forest Fairy - Small weak Mage with Entangles and god defense and movement in Forest.
Water Fairy - Water-based mage.
Mountain Mage - Decent fighter with a ranged Magic attack.
Apprentice - Weakened cross between a Bard and Witch.

The Mercs
Orcish Grunt
Elvish Archer
Thief
Drake Fighter
Skillsman - A very mixed fighter with weak version of abilities.

I won't put mainline units in the Mercs, because they are in mainline. I also don't want to code 'weaker' abilities, not that I could in some cases.

How is a mage from the mountains different from the mainline mages from anywhere, including mountains?

I want Fairies just to be Fairies, and a pixie is basically the same thing as a fairy.

The Apprentice. You mean one of two things.

1. A flying unit with a magical slow attack. That's not needed, as I have the witch and bard for that.
Or,
2. A lv 0 unit that can turn into the witch or bard. I don't like the Idea of having a lv 0 that can turn into a different races, (Witch-Human, Bard-Catkin), even though I could logically pull it off.

Hmm... I'll see about the phoenix. I am working with a size restriction, but I do like phoenix(s/es/um/i). A leviathan might work too.

have you considered using the units in the game archon?
it's about as retro as sprite-oriented games can go

I think that if we are going to have a real retro era, then we can't forget about 'rat' unit from Rogue - ridiculously weak, but also annoying because of the sheer quantity.

Also, I think that rather than dividing units into that kind of factions, we should divide them into lawful/chaotic, with a few neutral units available to each side - that's because in most of these old games we don't have a clear factions system, but just good/bad alignment, and a simple 'holy war', with some neutral mercenary units joining each sides.

As the Forum Sith will tell you, watch out for copyright materials. Nothing of that sort can mix with Wesnoth - in game or the forums. Think "Michael Rat" instead of "Mickey Mouse"... :hmm:

Indeed. He is fine so far because he has no plans to use anything of the sort, but the suggestions about taking sprites from other games are not going to happen.
