Character Progression and Leveling

Post by gs3user007 »

I couldn't find this information in the wiki anywhere... Is there a list that describes which classes level into which other classes? Something that says a mage will level into a healer, or someone even more destructive? I've learned most of it now that I've played some, but I was going into it somewhat blind.

And now a question on leveling. I'm noticing that recruitable characters can't go above level 3. Why? Is there a similar cap on the important characters? I've put significant effort into getting a level 3 to have enough exp to level, only to have them blink, and still be level 3.

I'm playing on BfW 1.6, going through the first campaign.

I like the table. It provides very comprehensive stats on all the units. I don't see where it addresses some of my other questions though:

a) A lvl 2 mage changes into either a white mage, or a red mage. Is this information displayed somewhere?
b) What are the level caps on units? It appears to be different between recruitable characters and story characters. Why is it the way that it is?

Yes. Look at the human mage in that table. You'll see the levelling options there.

And the level caps differ depending on unit lines. SOme lines are capped at level 1 like the Goblin and the Walking Corpse. Others go right up to 4 like the Shaman, Sergeant and Mage. There are a few level 5 units, but they are mostly isolated and cannot be levelled to, like the Ancient Lich and Delfador. Most units go up to level 3, including most, if not all, campaign-specific units apart from delfador.

So the [f] indicates that it'll advance to a new class? If that's the case, how do you know which one?

for me, still there is the question, why is it not possible to upgrade to higher levels then 3 ?
You do not have to change anymore, but only to make the character a bit stronger and some more LPs.

why not ?!? It's in most of the other games. And then you can stop at say level 9 or smth.

Because Wesnoth is not an RPG. Having troops level in long progressions renders them more like characters than troops, which isn't the intention. See FPI#2 and 3.
2 Most units should have more than 3 levels of advancement
Background: lots of people think that the typical 3 levels of advancement for each unit is insufficient, and that most units should have 4, 5, or even more levels of advancement.
Result: The developers feel that 3 levels is enough. Avoiding the creation of 'super units' is high on the developer's priority list, and even if there were level 4+ units, the most powerful units wouldn't be more powerful than the current level 3 units. This would also drain art resources, as well as reduce the contrast between units -- too many units would seem like boring repetitions of other units.
It is thought that a better, more interesting way to do things would be to have more alternate paths of advancement within the 3 levels rather than have 4+ levels of advancement.
3 All units should have advancement lines that go to level 3.
Background: A number of users feel that having units that only go to level 2 is not right.
Result: The developers feel that an uneven tree is more dynamic and interesting.

ah ok,... if that is the wish of the developer, so it is... thx !

could you just answer me another question ??

If I have a healer next to a tree (elves) the tree does only heal by 8, and not be 8+8,.. why ??

or if I have multiple healers around a character, it also only heals as fast as if one healer is there. I think sometimes this is to slow, for my level 3 character to recover, so they are away of the battle for a lot of time (4,5 rounds)

thanks.

I have found it myself. Thx !
Max healing is 8 LP, or 10 with resting.

This I would like an other way round.... but else the game is awsome !!!!

There are campaigns (and multiplayer scenarios) where you can select from a set of options when a unit levels (e.g. a new ability, more strikes, ...).

Try Under the Burning Suns or Wesband.
