It's true that they fly and somehow the enemy has a fetish of killing them - good for luring things around... :?

But unless in a mountainous area, I'd always take the outrider over a griphon master.

Mountains, sure, and how about rivers and oceans! The gryphs got it all goin on.

Caves only because the Outriders take 3 moves... Tolkein says elves don't mind caves!

Yes, this still works, at least in Easy and Normal. Personally, I 'm usually short of level 2/3 mages at this stage (not having Moremirmu), and so I still prefer to recruit/recall some of them and try to level them up against the corpses while moving all my forces to the eastern castle.

However, the holy water has disappeared in 0.8.2. To bring it back, change OBJ_HOLY_WATER to OBJ_POTION_HOLY in Valley_of_Death.cfg lines 154 and 155.
