Re: IoA - Reth portrait
I caught that, but I just think that the size of his right eye fits in with the angle of his nose and mouth, as well as proportions, and that his left eye is tilted as well, but is sized as if his head was turned much further away from the viewer than it is.Ranger M wrote:you'll notice that his nose and mouth are tilted in the same way

Re: IoA - Reth portrait
I think that the problem may be the eyebrow, as it makes his right eye look bigger (or the orb under the skin look bigger), it supposed to be raised slightly, I may have exaggerated this too much, on that note I think that his right eye might need moving down a pixel too, it skews the percieved angle of the head (I just noticed that my subconscious seems to switch between two different perceptions of the heads rotation, probably due to that eye)Turuk wrote:I caught that, but I just think that the size of his right eye fits in with the angle of his nose and mouth, as well as proportions, and that his left eye is tilted as well, but is sized as if his head was turned much further away from the viewer than it is.
Re: IoA - Reth portrait
Makes sense to me, and your explanation fits with the impression I received. At a quick glance he was fine, but taking time to look at him made me think, well, the right side of his face looks fine, or the left side looks fine, but the angle I expect from one side does not match with the other.Ranger M wrote:I think that the problem may be the eyebrow, as it makes his right eye look bigger (or the orb under the skin look bigger), it supposed to be raised slightly, I may have exaggerated this too much, on that note I think that his right eye might need moving down a pixel too, it skews the percieved angle of the head (I just noticed that my subconscious seems to switch between two different perceptions of the heads rotation, probably due to that eye)
And as you may be thinking I'm being nitpicky, I give my apologies, but you've done such great work on this portrait to begin with and then in assimilating critique to improve it that I would hate to have something throw it off.
You posted as I was writing back. Actually, it still seems a bit elevated. I overlaid some rough lines to outline to you what pops out to me.Ranger M wrote:This better?

Re: IoA - Reth portrait
sorry, but both of the lines for the eyes that you've drawn look way off to me
personally I see it as being more like this, which is how it's supposed to be

Right, but then in the line you drew, you can observe that the eyebrows still convey an odd shape as if his face came to a vertical ridge at the center line.

Re: IoA - Reth portrait
ah, his eyebrows, not his eyes? sorry, I thought that we were talking about the eyes themselves, your lines make sense now.
Better? (I should really make changes, then post replies to stop all of this double posting)
And damn, it's starting to look like he might need some hair... I hate doing hair, mostly cos I can't

Indeed, and you can always use the edit button if you would like to avoid that.Ranger M wrote:Better? (I should really make changes, then post replies to stop all of this double posting)

As to the hair, I did not say anything because I just thought he was the type of guy that shaved his head bald, though it might not hurt to add a bit of character.

normally I would, but you were online during both postings, and the forums don't could edited posts and new posts for new post notification (or at least, I don't think that they do)Turuk wrote:Indeed, and you can always use the edit button if you would like to avoid that.
yeah, he will unfortunately need hair (Hair per-se isn't as much of a problem, it's coming up with a hairstyle, or to be more precise, the part of the hairstyle visible under the hood)Turuk wrote:As to the hair, I did not say anything because I just thought he was the type of guy that shaved his head bald, though it might not hurt to add a bit of character.

Fair enough, but don't worry, there is little that I miss around here.Ranger M wrote:normally I would, but you were online during both postings, and the forums don't could edited posts and new posts for new post notification (or at least, I don't think that they do)

You could always go with a rough mop style. Sort of like a bowl cut, but shorter, messy and ill-cut to convey his lack of concern for hair as anything more than something that must be controlled. He's too busy sneaking around to have time to be stylish and fancy.Ranger M wrote:yeah, he will unfortunately need hair (Hair per-se isn't as much of a problem, it's coming up with a hairstyle, or to be more precise, the part of the hairstyle visible under the hood)
Argument could also be made towards a short hair style more suitable to fighting (cannot be grabbed), but the implication that every single martial person cut their hair short is a bit absurd at times, as I am sure plenty of people were too cocky/careless to worry about it.

Re: IoA - Reth portrait
I think that messy and relatively short would suit his character best (he's serious about fighting, but in a way that's not very thoughtful, it just wouldn't occur to him that having very short hair would help, and really doesn't care about how he looks)Turuk wrote:You could always go with a rough mop style. anyway, we'll see what monstrosity I manage to come up with later, I've gotta go eat now.

Re: IoA - Reth portrait
On a semi-related note to the hair, what about a scar or two on his arms? It occurred to me just now that you'd think he'd have picked up a few scratches by now, given his lifestyle...
Anyway, the face already looks better to me--Good work!
@Turuk: Indeed--For the past couple weeks I've been unsure as to whether they have made it so that edits trigger the topic reply notification or if you're just really alert

Re: IoA - Reth portrait
Scars might be a nice touch, but maybe he's just that good with a blade?
For Ranger M and you both, you are right, an edit does not indeed move the topic forward in the active topics list or turn the read post back into unread. I do always hit view who is online when I have read all the unread posts I have, which refreshes automatically and therefore lets me know when something new is up while I go about whatever else I was doing.

Re: IoA - Reth portrait
He is indeed skilled with a blade but weather or not that would save him from permanent scarring...
of course there is the small detail that scars tend to age people and he needs to look young, especially at the start, so I think no scars for him.
EDIT: time to test Turuk's skillz: Now with added hair, quite possibly the best I've ever done (I seem to be doing that allot recently
, although to be honest, with hair that's not a great feat, I avoid doing hair like the plague)

Re: IoA - Reth portrait
Fair enough--I wasn't too sure about the scars.
Nice! Those bangs look good.
Though... Just seeing it there and it looks like on the near side of his face feels a little strange--Maybe a strand or two against the inside of his hood on the far side?
Anyway, good work! The hair definitely helps.
