Very minor update to the Thunderer, based on crit on IRC from zookeeper. Updated chainmail and changed shading on cloak, forehead for Dragonguard. I call these both done.

I want to ask if you could change the skin tone of the dragonguard to match the one on the thunderer?

Because your dragonguard looks less healthy (the skin tones you use looks like the old games skin, and there is a notable difference between the two) than its previous version.

I suppose skin is very hard to paint, but I think that would improve the portrait overall.

Apart of that, they look awesome. :)

If I was going to change one, it would be the Thunderer, actually - he's a touch too tanned-looking for someone who spends most of his time underground, I'd prefer paler skin. But the face took me enough time to do that i think I will leave it as it is. I prefer the Dragonguard's....

getting better all the time :D!

like i already said yesterday on irc: don't make the dark dots that dark - the current colour makes them look like little holes with nothing behind them.
but apart from that the thunderer looks pretty much there :)

regarding the dragonguard:
i just read your response to vendanna's crit on the face and if you don't want to change it, you'll have to leave it as it is. but is certainly not good enough yet. give the skin a skincolour! your skincolour is possible - but only if you have a strong yellow lightsource... for wesnoth portraits i'd recommend a more neutral light setting. i attatch a paintover of what i think the face could look like (i also changed the shape of the ear and nose). i think i said it already in my last posts but: use reference! search for pictures of bald men with a similar direction of light.... same goes for the beard.
sorry but he'll need some more work...

/me grumps.

But that does look better. You art wizard you >.<

How's this for the Thunderer? I bumped the brightness of the dots a bit.

EDIT: also, a rework of the fighter lines. I moved the head down, redrew the lines for the arm and shoulder, fixed the right pauldron, and completely reworked the shaping of the whole hauberk. i think it looks a lot better - it's amazing what a little fiddling will do...

TSI, did you use a different method to do the chainmail for the Dragonguard as opposed to what you used for the Thunderer?

The chainmail on the Dragonguard seems a bit, well, not like chainmail at all. The large gaps of metal between the holes makes it look as if the holes were driven out of the metal, and not similar to small rings linked together.

I second Turuk's statement.

The fighter looks generally better, but the strap holding the shoulder-pads wouldn't work in almost any situation except for the posing. If you think about how it's going to be used, he's probably going to be moving around somewhat, dodging, swinging etc., and thusly the current solution doesn't have much practical use. He'd just have to raise both of his arms in only a vaguely horizontal pose, and the shoulderpads would just pop off (meaning he'd basically just have to hold the axe differently). Some variaton with the scale mail wouldn't hurt either, but that's much less of a priority :P
A quick idea with the shoulder-pads would be to connect them to the belt with a buckle that allows three straps.

Turuk: same method, but i think i spaced the holes a little widely in a couple of places, particularly the upper arm and the thigh - I'll fix that.

Meantime, here's a rework of the face based on kitty's crit.

Girgistan: I was intending to have the pauldrons attached to the scale mail by straps from the shoulders - I need to add the attachment points, though... But a ring connector would accomplish much the same thing with a clearer effect, so maybe that solution.

Ah fair enough, that is what I figured. Upper left arm and then the inside of where the arm meets the shoulder, left thigh, a few spots near the canister on the right thigh (below his belt buckle), and the spot on the top of his right forearm. Just in case an extra set of eyes helps you out, those are the places I saw/see currently.

Boom. I've fixed the major areas anyway - the smaller ones would require a complete redraw of the whole of the chainmail, and whilst I'll do that if necessary, i'd prefer not to...

EDIT: minor update based on IRC crit from Shadow Master.

The chainmail and gun are great imo! I was wondering if you were going to alter the shine on the poor guy's head though?

I did tone it down a touch, but possibly the shiny area remains a touch too wide. I'll see what kitty says.

EDIT: initial sketch for the Dwarf Lord. EDIT again: and a minor edit to the dwarf lines to fix the issue Girgistan raised.

About the dwarf lord: is it me, or does it look like the axe blades are at a 60/120 degree angle to each other, not a 180/180 degree one?

I see it too, but I think it's just because of the shape of the axe--As soon as a little bit of shading and/or line weight variation is added, I imagine it will go away...

On the fighter--There's something kinda strange about the placement of his legs... They make it appear that his pelvis is straight on to the camera, but his shoulders are twisted away... Could be intentional? It still feels like an uncomfortable position to me.
I also feel like they (his legs) are a little far apart :hmm:
Anyway, looking good on everything! At this rate, the Dwarves will all have great new portraits in no time! :D
