Have you never seen someone that is balding?cobra wrote:Excellent job! But shouldn't he have more hair on top???
It is definitely an improvement over the old version, as it certainly looks more like very tiny rings chained together. A fairly high level of armor quality, which is to be expected from a dwarf.thespaceinvader wrote:I tried a new chain mail method.

I have no Idea about art, but couldn't you just scale the pic up, apply the effect that worked to nice for the small image and shrink it again?

The small image is the larger one shrunk, and I imagine that shrinking the chainmail design on the larger image just smudged all of the lines together, making it hard to see details?Lizard wrote:I have no Idea about art, but couldn't you just scale the pic up, apply the effect that worked to nice for the small image and shrink it again?

Re: thespaceinvader's portraits - current, Dwarf Thunderer
I'm not quite sure what you mean.
But scaling down the rings method seen here (which is quite complex) looked awful - the regularity and close spacing caused interference patterns which were very obvious, and i couldn't work out an easy way to fix them. So i rolled back to the old one, which was simpler, and looked better in the small version, whilst keeping the large one the same.
I fiddled with it a bit, i think i fixed those issues.
Cobra: firstly, this is matching the sprite. Secondly, they do shave their beards. As you'll see with some future dwarves - they don't grow them au naturale, they STYLE them. In some cases, this involves shaving parts of them. Thirdly, going bald does not mean that one shaves one's head. It means one is LOSING one's hair. Fourthly, I think dwarves have naturally high foreheads anyway, since i think balding looks better on them. It's one of my prerogatives as the artist. You want dwarves with full heads of hair, you're welcome to draw them yourself.

Errr, it's male pattern baldness. Perhaps you think it should be long at the back, so that dwarfs all look like Bill Bailey? (thankfully I don't imagine thespaceinvader is going to take much note of this particular piece of criticism.)cobra wrote:Dwarves should have some hair on top, I mean they never shave their beards, why would they shave their head.

Bill Bailey would make an AWESOME dwarf. The berzerker's hairstyle will be kinda inspired by him, actually. Well, a cross between him, billy connolly and lemmy from motorhead...

Awesome work! The chainmail is a lot better...
Though, shouldn't it pile up a little tiny bit around the elbow of his right arm? Obviously not much, because of the tight knit of the chainmail, but it looks somewhat strange to me right now

Anyway, great job! I can't wait to see this in-game

Re: thespaceinvader's portraits - current, Dwarf Thunderer
Compared to the new chain mail, the top part around the shoulders looks rather odd. It's hard to describe only that the two styles seem to clash quite a bit.

Should do a little, yeah. I'll make some minor fiddles.

Very nice, I love the new chainmail. It must have been my eyes because now the ears on it look fine. I also like how you added a little dirt to his face.

The ring size of that chainmail would be...really small. Like what you might find in a piece of magical elven chainmail, perhaps.

It's odd, it is a lot larger on the working scale version.
Maybe i need to repeat the technique with larger rings.

Re: thespaceinvader's portraits - current, Dwarf Thunderer
That looks great! How did you do that?
Not really, each ring is barely wider than the tongue on his belt buckle. That only gives you a couple pixels on the regular sized picture. They should probably be at least twice the size.thespaceinvader wrote:It's odd, it is a lot larger on the working scale version.
