Wesnoth 0.8.1 for Mac OS X
I didn't realize until now that there was a copy of 0.8.1 for OS X on the forums. I wanted to poste here just in case there are other mac users like me who likewise didn't realize a mac version of 0.8.1 was available.
I'd like to thank scott for compiling the code while Sithrandel was unavailable. So many changes have been made between 0.8.0 and 0.8.1 it's really nice to have the new version.
Scott just compiled the application, it should be available here:

Thank you quartex!
i've been impatiently waiting for this to appear on the downloads page since 0.8.1 was announced. It looks like theres a lot of exciting new stuff (including a few things i had a hand in)

Feel free to PM me if you start a new terrain oriented thread. It's easy for me to miss them among all the other art threads.

I can't scroll using the mouse. Is that a problem with this compile, or 0.8.1 in general?
P.S: It unexpectedly quit the first time I started a game, I'm going back to 0.8.0.

It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.
It works fine for me, and I'm using a Mac too.

I'm new here, but I am a Mac user and fan of wesnoth. I didn't realize that someone had built 8.1 for OS X, so I got impatient and started hacking on it. I'm not a very skilled programmer, but it's pretty easy to build if you have Xcode (which is free), and follow the instructions included with the 0.8 version.
I have also built the editor and tried to package the documentation. A minor detail, but the application does identify itself as the correct version when you Get Info in the Finder.
It's great of Scott to compile the app and make it available, but I think we need to package it up for distribution. You can download what I have put together at
http://homepage.mac.com/schu/FileSharing1.html
Let's get it in shape to put on the main download page.
I want to emphasize that I have barely looked at the source code and made only a couple of trivial tweaks. The tools are free. Anyone who has ever done any C coding could have done it easily. I didn't fix anything other than a few errors that prevented it from compiling.
Look guys, I'm tired of living with Mac versions of software always lagging behind. Let's do something about it.

schu, thanks for making a complete package with the editor and the documentation. I don't mind waiting a few days for someone to port the mac version. Normaly I wouldn't be able to play games like this at all, except that a few people have taken the time and effort to port it to OS X.
Since you're new, you probably don't know that a forum-goer named Sithrandel has been porting the OS X versions for at least the last 8 months. He's been porting each version ever since I joined at version 0.6.1, and he's the main person I credit towards fostering the mac community of Wesnoth players. Without his constant work, many of us don't have the software or knowhow to port it ourselves. However as of late I haven't seen him around the forums, and I'm not sure where he's gone. Maybe he's on vacation, I'm not sure. But he has done the majority of the work in creating the mac editor, and allowing users to drag and drop campaigns into the OS X application.
But we should try to get a downloadable version of 0.8.1 for OS X on the main download page, becuase there are probably at least a few mac users who don't know to come to the forums and check out this topic for the mac binaries, and they get confused when they don't see a link on the main download page.

I don't have a lot of experience with open source projects, but the current situation with wesnoth for OS X seems to be a common conundrum. Anyone can do it, but no one is responsible for it. People have real lives (or so I've heard) which often interfere with or abort their involvement, and the project languishes.
In real life, I'm an engineeer who occasionally writes software, which should in no way be confused with a software engineer. I actually have very little experience with Xcode or C++.
I assume that Sithrandel wrote the documentation and supplied the files to facilitate the OS X port. My hat's off to him. He made it easy for anyone who has any programming experience. I could not possibly have ported the code without his tools and guidance.
So let's everyone check it out, polish it up if needed, and make it available to the general Mac community.

Looking at the above posters in this thread I see that we have some very important contributors who are mac users, and thir continued involvement is key to the success of this project. Thus I agree making sure they (and all us mac users) have access to the most recent versions of Wesnoth is very important.

Story this far:
1) Sithrandel was busy at work and that delayed package
2) Sithrandel built and uploaded package to SourceForge incoming area
3) I was away (more than 24 hours) and package got weeded from SourceForge incoming area
4) Sithrandel has been busy at work and not been able to rebuild/upload the package
5) Sithrandel is on vacation (offline) for next few weeks.
