Re: Art for Bad Moon Rising - Orcs

Post by doofus-01 »

Thanks, Girgistian. Good point about the extreme variations. Even though it's a campaign, it's still part of the little Wesnoth world, so it would be nice to keep it looking that way. The compartmentalized nature of campaign art is probably a result of real life constraints, not sure how willingly it should be embraced.

I had problems with this fellow's far shoulder, I'm not sure how it turned out.

This is supposed to be Huric's wife (for the few of you who know or care who any of these characters are). She's royalty, but I didn't want to make her a Lisar knock-off (if I even could). I drew her feet because I think this will be part of a story image, and her portrait version will be a ghost based off of this.

And the ghost version. It's hard to make ghostly vapors without having them spill outside the frame edge.

WRT the orc: remember Wesnoth's orcs have brownish skin ranging from a dark caucasian to a middle eastern tone. Not green.

Right, I'll fix that. Thanks.

This is a non-combat/dummy unit, but she gets dialogue and maybe a story image so...

I tried a different way and used a reference. I now realize I screwed up the chest but I don't feel motivated to change that right now, unless there are other things wrongs as well.

It does look a little better if you click on it.

I agree with Kitty--Your shading made a huge leap of an improvement just in between your last post and this one. Great job! :D

Though, I don't think her nostrils should be clearly visible like that--It gives her a somewhat pig-like look.
Anyway, very minor detail--Good work!

I cannot help add my voice to theirs, given the level of change in the work. Very improved, and if all of your portraits turn out like that from now on, I cannot wait to see more work from you.

One question, what is at the top of the tankard? That slightly lighter spot in the dark hole at the top, is that a cover, or shading?

Thanks. If anyone is curious, I used a photograph from Man of La Mancha as a reference (for the head and shoulders). I didn't trace or use a grid or anything like that though.

It may be bad shading, but the light thing near her thumb is supposed to be a spigot (? - I don't know what they are called, but you can put them on a bottle to keep from dribbling or pouring too much). She's poisoning the drink. If it requires an explanation, I guess it requires a revision...

your shading has improved dramatically, impressive

the "poisoning the drink" part seems pretty recognisable to me

the cap on the drink isn't, maybe you should remove it entirely...

Indeed, I got the poison part, it was the cap to which i was referring, it tends to blend it just enough that it's hard to make out just what it is supposed to be. I would go with removing it entirely as well, or altering the design/coloring to make it more prominent.

OK, thanks. I tried again with the mug, hopefully it's no longer confusing. I also made her breasts a less ridiculous size.

This is a retry at the queen/ghost up above. I didn't get nearly as far with this, but it's as far as I'm going to get in the near future. So if anyone sees anything wrong... (The forum distorts, so click on it.)

Looks just fine and I was not going to say anything about her breasts, but she does look more like a real woman now too.

Good work on the facial features on this portrait as well, it is a great deal better than the previous one. While it is certainly fine as is, her clothes could use a bit of shading so that they are not all one color. But as it is as far as you are going for now, it certainly works.

I agree, I intend to shade it when I have enough time. That's just the base hue and shape. It pays to post partially flat images (even if they aren't very impressive) - if the shapes are wrong, you waste time shading them. Apparently it can take quite a while for tunnel vision or bias to wear off, so it's useful to ask for a second opinion. Even if it seems trivial, it's not.

Thanks.

Nice work!
I think the queen's hands are just a little bit too small--Other than that, I don't see anything wrong :)
