New terrain art?
Do we need new terrains? If this is in wrong section, move it.
I made a new desert terrain, cracky desert. You can see it in the attachments, along with some other terrains.
I had a idea about dark land terrains where undead would have 60-70% def, so they would be for undead. And maybe they could be used in campaigns? I think they would be useful, because there are forests for Elves and mountains for Dwarves, etc. What do you think? I made a few.

Re: New terrain art?
The tiles are very good.
The "cranky sand" needs to be a little more shaded, compared to the other default tiles. I like the other two, though.

And when you put these tiles together, you shouldn't be able to see where one tile starts and where it ends... The terrain should be continuous.dontano wrote:The tiles are very good.![]()

And I can't really see what the dark land is...

Re: New terrain art?
The dark land is meant to be some sorta mud. And I made hills for it.

Re: New terrain art?
Well, I agree with Jequ. Terrain tiles aren't based solely on one image. You need a lot of variations, too, in order to reach the "loop" effect. Take a look on default tiles: they are really a lot, including hexagon variations and such. Well, good luck pal. Yeah, true... I didn't think about that.

The cracks in the desert tile doesn't continue to the adjacent tiles, for example.woodmouse wrote:

And making a new terrain type requires a lot of work. You have to make convex (right word?) images so your tile will fit next to ALL the other terrain types. Look at .../images/terrain folder for reference.
Re: New terrain art?
Well, I can tell you that I tried some weeks ago to simply recolor an existent terrain tile, but it's too damn hard. That's why I decided to leave this work to the devs and to everyone who's got more artistic capabilities than mines...

Re: New terrain art?
ya you would think terrain to be easy but its so damn hard at times. also the desert looks to be from an up/down perspective.
Re: New terrain art?
Hmmm I know terrains are hard, but I still want to make them, is that not legal?

Check out my sprites!
Re: New terrain art?
Oh, of course it's legal. By all means, we love to have people make stuff for us.woodmouse wrote:Hmmm I know terrains are hard, but I still want to make them, is that not legal?

The first thing you'd need to solve in your tiles is the 'grid' effect:

Someday I need to write my own tutorial, so I don't have to link to Tsugumo's barely intelligible mess, there. Tsugumo - a good artist, but a terrible writer.
Play Frogatto & Friends - a finished, open-source adventure game!
Re: New terrain art?
Ah... Final Fantasy VI...
It's indeed a good point and thanks for posting the link, Jetryl.
The SNES graphics of the most famous RPG games (like Chrono Cross, ie) were outstanding, for the people of those times. Incredibly shaded (at the original resolution) and well-designed, you really don't feel the "grid" effect of those simple, but effective tiles. And you really don't need big ones to start over. The original tiles were at about 16x16...
The grid effect can be fairly noticed in FFIV (FFII in US), because the original concepts of the game were for NES, and not for its successor. You can notice the difference of quality if you put a screenshot of the first FF (for NES) next to a FFV screenshot (for SNES, never released in the US).
Sorry for the Final Fantasy reviews... I'll stop talking about them now.
What I meant is, woodmouse, that you just need some good training, in order to achieve visual perfection. Pixel art is the starting point of the old school video-game graphics, but you just need to apply (almost) the same "technical" rules that every pix-artist should know. You'll learn them while experiencing the inevitable mistakes that everyone makes in the life.

Re: New terrain art?
Oh yeah, I love some of Tsugumo's stuff, I ended up teaching myself a bit by looking at his stuff, not by following his instructions, but the latest chapters, (12+ I think) which I can't find any more are easier to follow.Jetryl wrote:Oh, of course it's legal. However, we're faced with one unfortunate reality: if we want stuff to look good in the main game, we can only accept (into the main game) stuff that is well-drawn. There's really no escaping this - if we start putting "bad" or "just okay" stuff in there to make people feel better, the game will start looking bad.

That chapter was one of my favourites though.

Re: New terrain art?
Hmmm I think we should need snowy mountains. I mean, I would need some in a multiplayer scenario I'm making with my friend. I tried to make some, but they looked so ugly I didn't even upload them... And I think they could be useful to others too? I mean, mainline things?

Re: New terrain art?
They are being worked on. I would link but I'm on a mobile I'm on a mobile device without copy+paste.
