Re: peasant & spearman
Thanks for the constructive comments.
Concerning the cropping: I was going out too far because it is easy to chop parts off, not as easy to pull the frame out, and I wasn't too clear on what was going on with the upcoming style (that will replace the current 205 pixel black box). In case Jetryl, or whoever is in charge of coding the portrait & dialogue feature, happens to see this: How would the scaling be determined, do the images need to be squares? Or would just the width be scaled so that a figure can have a lance or something extending above his head without becoming a midget?
Concerning the tilting: When I said I didn't think pictures could just be rotated, I meant that, generally, there would be parts that would need to be redrawn because of inconsistencies, I didn't mean that blurring would be a problem. For example, if there was cloth hanging straight down, it won't be hanging straight down anymore after rotation. As for this guy in particular, he doesn't look like he's falling over to me, but if he is then he is. I rotated him 5 degrees, is that better?
I tried to change the hat, but it wasn't working. I don't think there is much freedom for design, because it has to have a brim like the sprite, and he is poor so the hat can't be too fancy.

Re: peasant & spearman
Here is one idea for the hat. I could be modified a little bit to make it look more interesting, though:

But I think the current hat is pretty enough

Re: peasant & spearman
Honestly it does look much better to me, thanks!
Re: peasant & spearman
ah - the cropping is much better now!
concerning the hat, i am not sure why you dropped the straw hat? the last one wasn't perfect but more farm-like and truer to the sprite... here is a pic of a straw hat from a medieval clothing site.

i'm terribly sorry but i have to play the anatomy police again
:
short: your guy has no male proportions. he has no breastcage, his hips are too wide and the head is too smal in relation to the body. and he needs neck muscles. i attatch a quick redline... my version may be a tad too muscular, i exaggerated to show you what i mean.

Re: pee-pee-sant & spearedman!!!!
wow, they're looking great! why did you drop the straw hat though? It was really good. And the stance for both of them are heaps better!
also if anyone is making a campaign about a hero spearman (or peasant if you want) go into this forum, click on the pic you want, then, when it comes up bigger click and drag a bit up and to the right. you end up with this cool looking hero pic.
Also, just randomly, I used your peasant pic for a school assignment!
Keep up the good work!

Your second paragraph baffles me.

Re: pee-pee-sant & spearedman!!!!
my second paragraph? oh sorry its not very clearer
but I'll just make it clear here: find the peasant/spearman pic you want. Click on it, then when it comes up with the full size image click and drag the pic around. You will end up dragging a mini-shadow/faded version. if you put the shadow version up a bit and to the right you get this 'hero' look.
If you still can't understand that go jump in a lake.

edit: here is a pic of what I mean.
It sorta seems IMO like an ancient hero spearman or something.

Re: peasant & spearman
I think this is heavily dependent on what program you're using. I for one happen to use paint, and I doubt such fading effects will occur in that

Re: peasant & spearman
Thanks everyone. I'll go back to the straw hat.
Pazx - Guess I'll have to go jump in a lake. I think I get what you mean about dragging the image around (in firefox), I hadn't noticed that before. But I don't know what you mean by "hero look".
kitty - Thanks for the demonstration. I'm afraid I'm not following you though, it just looks like a different pose with the groin lined up. Maybe it's just best to start over.
So here is pass #2. The clothing is of course wrong (at least it's not an armor bikini this time), but is the figure underneath OK?

Re: peasant & spearman
Generally fine, I'd change the pose to a little less 'walking' though, and the expression to a little less sad(ish).
Anatomically, the only thing that bothers me with a quick glance is that his trapezius seems non-existant.
EDIT: typo.

Re: pee-pee-sant & spearedman!!!!
look up at where it says post subject: Re: ^^^
why did you give him that clothing? (2 seconds after I wrote that i thought it might be to show his body and posture, am I right?) also I kinda liked the way he was holding the pitchfork before
(don't just take my opinion)
damn straight! walk = nono. sad = nono.Girgistian wrote:Generally fine, I'd change the pose to a little less 'walking' though, and the expression to a little less sad(ish).

Re: peasant & spearman
Thanks Girgistian, Pazx. Looking at it again, I'm not so fond of the new guy either, so never mind him.
I'd had a plan, but now I don't. I need to think about this some before I try again (and some more practice wouldn't hurt).
Thanks.
That is correct.Pazx wrote:2 seconds after I wrote that i thought it might be to show his body and posture, am I right?

Re: peasant & spearman
i'm confused is that the spearman or the peasant?
however, i have a couple of anatomical issues with him again... please let me know if i pester you!
- breast cage: has to extend further to the back. and your placement of those two rib indications is *very* random (and wrong). furthermore they aren't necessary - you won't see them through any shirt! i'd rather indicate sort of a center line.
- his neck is set to low in the breastcage (which also leads to girgistan's trapezius problem) and thus the whole head has to be higher.
- muscle indications on his arm make not much sense.
-> get you some ref!
and a general comment on your shirts: you always make their lower end very pointy. most soft fabrics tend to behave differently, there is a sof curve. look at your own shirt in the mirror (and if it has such pointy peaks post a photo!)

Re: peasant & spearman
It's fine kitty, you don't pester. If I don't want to be criticized, I should stop posting messy images.
Thanks again.
Neither, he is a distraction and a good example of why I should let things cool off for a day before posting. But still, thanks for the demonstration, I'll try to keep it in mind for the next attempt.kitty wrote: i'm confused is that the spearman or the peasant?

Re: pee-pee-sant & spearedman!!!!
so its just a distraction? that's good.
you really should take a day off to cool down before attempting 'em again.
did everyone see my hero spearman thing?
Edit:(a couple of months after this post) oh look, I killed another thread.
