Could names be fixed?

Post by Elvish_Pillager »

I have been annoyed be names like Aethaennyncyn and Gweorraeraec. Is there a way to make this better?

It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.

And/or design a better algorithm than Markov for name generation ;)

Try saying both of them 10 times after each other each.

I wonder how Coldstone does it. I know some of the orc names ie. Gruga-Haar seem like they came from Coldstone.

I just personally change names if a unit with an annoying/odd name levels. If it's just a level 1 unit, I don't care as much. :P

I tend to use all or some essences of the original name in the new one, though. But that's just me, I guess.

Oh.. I do have a related question. Has anyone been able to make accents (é,ë, è, for example)? Doesn't seem possibly in-game.

I've noticed the Trolls have no names. Possibly it is because trolls are supposed to be too stupid to have individual names. If it's simply been left out because no one has yet made up some troll names, i'd like to propose some. My inspiration is gutteral coughing type sounds:

Gark, Trok, Nuk Kar, Ka, Hak, Tuh, Thur, Ruk, Dak, Thruf, Frok, Kuh, Tuk Ruh, Grar, Shuf, Stuh, Hoth, Nak, Urk, Lok, Hu Kah, Luk, Hask, Gulk, Grog, Thog, Urg,

Yes, trolls should have names, and I like the proposed name list.

Hmmm... looks like you could generate most of the list by setting random first letter from a set 'DGHKLT' followed by H/no-H, then 'AOU' then 'HGKR' or something like that. Far easier than for elves unless you restrict the vocabulary.

How about, use the same algorithm, but if the name is too long, start over.

There is already a limit of 12 characters per name.

Maybe it should be lowered to 10? The names in the first post are a little bit ... icky :).
