Right, it's called a reduction to absurdity. ;)

"Forest Rats" came into my mind. How about it. But, it's not too violent word.
I'm sorry if my English is bad and not comprehensible...

1. Sneer at the other side, and make no progress at all.

2. Actually put thought into this, and help to develop something which could potentially be a unique addition to Wesnoth flavor, something which has already been supported by a developer, and make something actually happen.

Which one would you prefer?
Pfft is this even a question?

Who WOULDN'T vote for option 1?
I suspect having one foot in the past is the best way to understand the present.

As we were talking about in OT a few weeks ago, Firefly makes up slang, uses Chinese words (which American views can't understand), and takes real words and assigns them new meanings (shiny!).

No, not really. Because that word was just essentially a euphemism. As far as I can tell, there was no logical progression from a concept in the world. Something more like tark, invented by Tolkien as an epithet for the Gondorians.

Firefly is a good example of things like that. And actually, if you translate some of the stuff, it's not simple cuss words, it's something like "You sack of inbred cattle meat." And yet it works oh-so-well in the show.

Farscape does this comfortably - frell, dren, mivonks etc etc etc. But those were quite clearly alternatives for real swearwords, which for some reason were not picked up by the universal translator microbes (i wonder why...(!)), so YMMV. I suspect in this instance it's better to be creative with the use of non-made-up 'swearwords' than it is to make up our own and use them effectively interchangeably with real ones.

And hey, don't get me wrong, but i just don't think that people are that sensitive, people start to swear as young as 12 or 13 years old, my classmates swear all the time and even the teacher says "s***" and "bullcrap".[/quote]

12 or 13? That late? I learned to swear at the age of eight. Was I amazingly precocious? Since I was taught by other eight year olds, I rather doubt it. If my experience was typical, then censoring "tree-shagger" in order to protect children is more than a little absurd.

If shag is obscene, does this mean I have to dispose of my shag carprting in order to avoid offending the more delicate among my houseguests? What about the shag bark Hickory in my yard? Do I have to cut that down, or would covering the bark with something opaque be sufficient? I had no idea these things were so offensive.

People...this is about coming up with an alternative for "tree-shagger," which quite a number of people have deemed entirely stupid and un-orish. We don't really care if you people disagree, especially if you re disagreeing because you don't see why we want it changed, and give back on inane reasons why we shouldn't change it.

The thing is, contrary to modern popular culture, swears/insults weren't randomly thrown out 4,5 letter words. Generally you attacked someone's appearance, their race/culture, their parents (which can be doubly offensive when the attack is against your lineage), their religion. Also, some things that we wouldn't think would be offensive are (like calling someone a dumb cow in german, or a silly egg in chinese--both of these are --at least according to my german teacher/my brothers chinese teacher-- more offensive than they sound. A great fantasy example of this is calling the Bangaa from the final fantasy series "lizards" Even though they are reptilian, the mere association between them and a lesser class of animals was offensive to the point of starting the first fight in FFT advance.

This leads to another thing about insults--the pride of the group being insulted. For example, if you insulted the ancestors of a normal American (one whose family has been in america for some time) they probably wouldn't be that offended--they would be more like 'What the hell are you even saying?" If you insulted a Native American's ancestors, or a chinese person's ancestors, it would be much more insulting to them. If you tried to call someone dumb when they didn't care about their intelligence (trolls, for example) it would have the same effect as calling a mage (especially an arrogant one) dumb.

Also, in order to make the insult sound right, you have to take into account who is saying it, which may be, from what people have been typing, the hardest part. You can't have orcs insulting you by referencing some great work (as some people quote Shakespeare when insulting others), and you can't have them making their insults too intelligent. At the same time you have to remember that they don't value intellect, and do value brawn--meaining calling someone weak would be more insulting to them than calling someone dumb. They wouldn't just stop there, though, because elves probablyl wouldn't care about being called weak. Other things that may incense them would be: insulting nature, insulting their pride (from what I see wesnoth elves are very prideful), calling them stupid (as a long lived race, they would value their intelligence) or maybe their ancestory, as generally elves imo set great store by their ancestors (though not so much as Tolkien's dwarves do).

So maybe calling them something like "wose-born cowards/bastards" would be cool. That implies that their mother was in fact a tree-"shagger," that they are illegitimate. Also you insult their honor, either by calling them a [censored] or by calling them cowardly...
...please remember that "IT'S" ALWAYS MEANS "IT IS" and "ITS" IS WHAT YOU USE TO INDICATE POSSESSION BY "IT".--scott

this goes for they're/their/there as well

I know it has been a while, but I would just like to say that as long as we do not use the cartoon symbols for swearing, I don't particularly care one way or the other.
