I have a few ideas for the 1.4 unit (no art thats for the art discusion forum):

well im not satifaced with some of the units of the Mainline Scenaarios, from 1.2:

Example for the Silver Mage lets put an new unit that is the advancement for this mage or even better an AMLA skill chose (Like in the Green Isle Camapaing)letsmake that our silver mage obtain 1 if 3 upgrades:

By Seeing the warriors in battle now you can use an a Alabard instead of your old wand.

By studinjg the armors you have found the way to increase by an 10% your resistances.

By the Daily Practice of Magic now you have devoloped a new attack= Holy Extermination.

Or nif we chose to make our Silver mage advance onto an a new unit this should be:

Platinium Mage (the Robes now are like an more discolored grey with a touch of Silver).

Description, this once were Silver Mages but after years of Practice have developed stronger magical powers ad now can travel trougth dimension whenever they want making of them now more Formidable opponents in battle since the Enmies that see them fell the upcoming terror of an elder in his plenitude.

Our Platinium Mage have an a last advancement an a golden Mage (same basic unit but Golden Robes are now they outfits):

Now the mages of the Silver mages have lend all his old powers behind, now they are the truly leaderss of the Silver Mages, are in off powerfull to anhilate an a entire island of monster, now with the knowledge of Centuries with them are respected and feared for most of the Races of Wesnoth.

Platinium Mage Attacks (L4 unit) :

Staff 11-3 Magical close combat.

Dimensional Sphere 15-6 Ranged Attack Magical.

Skills: Dimensional Teleporting: This unit remains into an a Dimensional Tunnel, since it remains there only the allies can see them.

Golden Mage:

Staff: 15-4 Close Combat Magical (L5 unit)

Dimensional Ethereal Bomb: 20-5 Ranged Attack Magical.

(Eye if you chose to use the AMLA, then The Unit Advancement it should be like This, the next one are with the attack, the old are equal but with the upgrades:)

Platinium Mage:

Alabard: 15-5 Magical

Golden Mage:

Alabard: 20-5 Magical

First of all, the stats on those units are way too strong. Here are the attacks for the Great Mage (same level, same tree):

melee: 9 - 2
ranged: 16 - 4 (magical)

This is yours (Platinum Mage):

melee: 11 - 3 (magical)
ranged: 15 - 6 (magical)
+ Ability

Not to mention it's probably going to retain its teleport, elemental resistances, and 6 mp to honor RIPLIB. If anything, the suggested unit's attack should not be stronger than its counterpart.

But even before that, Silver Mages are already lvl 3 units. Making a lvl 4 advancement isn't really necessary, and will probably create more issues to balance than is warranted by its benefit. Ditto for the lvl 5 advancement, but to a greater extent.

If you want a lvl 4 unit, then choose your Red Mage to advance to a Archmage -> Great Mage. I'm guessing that the Silver Mages were capped at lvl 3 for balance reasons, seeing as how powerful the teleport ability is.

Edit: I just wanted to add that Platinum is worth more than Gold, so it would make sense for the advancement to go Silver -> Gold -> Platinum. Then again, I have no idea what the value/ounce of precious metals are on Wesnoth.

As far as the Devs are concerned, the factions are balanced. Any change to the factions would be potentially unbalancing (in this case, making teleport sneak-attacks potentially more potent).

You need a really good reason to change a mainline faction. Something considerably stronger than a lack of personal satisfaction. You need a reason that's convincing to other users - the Devs, in particular.
