Help on "Mages and Elves"

Post by tanthius »

I play the old 0.8.8 version and I'm stuck on the two brothers campaign, specifically the mages and elves level. (I found some discussions on a campaign of the same name, but none of the levels match up so I'm pretty sure this one is different)

My main problem is that I can't hold enough villages to support a large army (or support training one) and I get swamped by swarms of hard to hit theives with archer support and, far enough into the game, several dozen heavy infantry. I doubt going back to level more troops would help because I wouldn't be able to support them anyway, and I had enough trouble on the previous level that I'm not sure I could try it again and end up with significantly more gold...

If anyone remebers this campaign, and could give me some advice, I'd appreciate it.

two things: Why are you playing the old version, and a whole lot has changed in Two Brothers, but they are the same campaign. However, if you have mages or elvish marksman, you should have an easier time taking out thieves.

It's the only version I've found that works on my computer, the newer one needs a newer OS and I'm about 2 minor updates short, but it's enough that the newer wesnoth won't work.

Second, the campaigns definetly aren't the same, I'm playing as undead (therefore no elves or mages).

I'll probably post a replay tomorrow, I don't have any saved at the moment, but you should see my problems better with that.

the problem is, we can't load your old replays very well. And what OS is 1.2.6 not running on? I'm sure people here would love to try to solve your software problems, as having software that can work on all platforms is something we would like to have.

Ok I took another look at the campaign and realized I had remembered wrong, it's actually the dark hordes campaign (it starts with two brothers too, guess I just got them mixed up in my head). I shouldn't have any trouble finding some help for that, a quick forum search and I'll be allright.

As far as my OS I'm running mac OS 10.3. The newest wesnoth needs (if I'm remembering right) 10.4.3, and the only older version I found was 0.8.8 (I had thought it was actually newer then that, but that's what's written in the bottom left corner of the title screen).

EDIT: After looking it up, 1.2.6 needs OS 10.3.9

i knew it!"mage and elves"weren't suppose to be in the two brothers campaign, i played dark hordes on 0.9.5 once, and quit after finish the mages and elves. if your playing easy/medium, then this scenario wouldn't be a problem. just send a few bats to grab as much villages as you can, that's the number one priority, if you get enough villages, start stationing troops around the lakes and in the captured villages. if i remembered correctly, in the hard difficulty, the enemy can recruit paladins, that would be hard to take care of. just defend at day, and attack at night, the elves are easy, but the mage are somewhat nasty opponent.

I'm on the easy difficulty (still pretty new to wesnoth, and I've never used undead before). The big problem I've got is being out numbered. 4 or 5 skeletons trying to hold a river against the elves failed because i was out numbered 2 to 1, maybe even 3 to 1, and thieves have a 60% cover on open ground so with a little bad luck I almost never hit them. Combine that with 2-3 HI trained every round to my north, and my ghosts and wraiths get overwhelmed. I tried using bats to take villages from the mage, but the cavalrymen he trains the first turn take them apart, and my main army is too slow to support them at all and end up defending at the rivers only bridge.

well. the easy difficulty is not hard to beat, if your running low on cash, recall lvl 2/3 units that you leveled from previous scenario to save gold. get ghost/wraith to deal with the mage. the HI/calavaryman only has melee attacks so your ghost can drain them at the same time have high resistance. for the elves, lure them into the shallow water, the elves/thieves have low defense in there, so use your skeleton or archers to kill them. send vampire bats to grab villages thats not close to the enemy, otherwise it will get killed, abandon villages if you need to, theres no need to waste a senseless kill on a bat.

now we're not playing on the same version. i don't know the details of the enemy as you said. if everything doesn't work out. you'll have to start from previous scenarios, see if you've over-recruited and fix it, also try to amass as much gold as you can.

Ok, here's todays replay, closest I've ever come to beating it. Given maybe 5 more turns (in addition to the 40 base) I think I could finish off the last leader and his 7 or 8 remaining HI and move my commander onto the victory hex (one spot north of mage's keep).

Hmm... ok apparently I can't attatch the replay, "extention not allowed". Anyone reading this know how to get a replay attatched?

Attach it as a zip file and it should work without problems.
