How did you find out about Wesnoth?
Moderator: Forum Moderators
In a book called Free Software for Dummies by Mary Leete. I was buying a couple of books about Linux, as I wanted to find out more and possibly give it a shot, and stumbled across the above title. The details for it looked interesting so I picked it up with the rest I was buying. Battle for Wesnoth is mentioned in the book, as is Freeciv. (There's a small section towards the end on games and other fun free software.) I downloaded Freeciv but didn't like the UI and was not impressed about needing to start up or join a server (I just wanted to play the game on my own first). Decided to give BfW a go and was hooked!
This was January last year and I've been playing, and lurking around the forums, ever since.
p.s. I am aware, from a thread in off-topic, that Freeciv may have improved since I tried it but, I am not really motivated enough to give it another try (yet).

My friend Joe and I were both sitting at my house bored with only one computer. His was currently being fixed by his friend. I decided to look for some kind of hot seat type turn based strategy game. I ran a search on google.com for "turn based strategy game" and found Battle for Wesnoth. After finding this game my friends and I have all started playing it. I just want to say thanks to everyone who was involved with the making of this game. I believe it is absolutely perfect in every way and wouldn't change a thing (besides making dwarves just a bit better). Thank you for making such a fabulous game and not even charging for it! You guys have given me hope for the future of gaming!
Other Website.
I don't even remember which one; I was doing a Google search for Mac freeware and shareware, and BfW was listed on one of the many file download sites I found. I actually downloaded a binary a while back, but never got around to downloading the necesary dev tools to compile. Another similar search months later led me to the Mac binary, which was effortless enough to install (hooray for the OSX app package model; drag'n'drop installs rock!) that I couldn't help but become addicted.
Sidenote: my discovery of the BfW binary came while I was deciding which Spiderweb Software RPG to register. Thanks to this great, free game, I haven't felt the need to blow $25 on a shareware title.

I've been a huge fan of Warsong for years. My older brother discovered the Sega game and we've played the same 20 scenarios for around a decade. I was doing some extra research on the game about two weeks ago when bored and somehow ended up on the Wesnoth Wikipedia page (gotta love Wikipedia). It had a link and I took it and well...
I'm here.
Praise to Warsong that led me here!

What would you give for your freedom?

I think he means illegal to play them IN PRISON. And by 'illegal' I think he probably means it was simply against prison rules.Qes wrote:warlordalf wrote: ironically in PRISON, working as a IT trainer my manager introduce us to linux, we installed it...and there 2005 it was illegal to play games..no internet

I think some US prisons allow games, but some don't....
