Uh....
Wesnoth isn't an MMORPG, it's a TBS. I don't think there's really much to compare between it and world of warcraft.

I have no basis for this, but I would garner to venture that,
- if you like Wow a lot you probably won't like Wesnoth
- if you like Wesnoth a lot you probably won't like WoW
The first rule is probably a little more true than the second.

These are 2 different type games, which are almost impossible to compare...
However, I've had experience in World of Warcraft for about a year and a half and I think I've been playing Wesnoth for two months now.
The first thing I want to say is: WoW takes a LOT of your free time (I have to confess I have played 70days, gamingtime... which multiplies to 1680 hours). It's a game you can't play when you only have 30mins/1hour a day to spend.
Wesnoth on the other hand is a game that can be played by anyone. It doesnt require 1/10th of the time youd need to put in WoW, it isn't about having "friends", if you wanna get further in the game, and you don't need to spend countless nights raiding for some epic loot.
This is the only area you can really compare the two games on, as for gameplay, the 2 genres are way too different to be able to compare. True, in World of Warcraft you can keep advancing, keep going further and further, while your social life keeps getting worse and worse.
Wesnoth, imo, is better, and I'm glad I quit WoW while I could.

Congratulations... I had a similar experience several years ago; now I'm careful about MMORPG due to the strong addictive aspects.Firense wrote:in World of Warcraft you can keep advancing, keep going further and further, while your social life keeps getting worse and worse.

A RL WoW-addict I know said there was a level 70 cap... so you can't keep advancing endlessly, though pretty close to that.

He's right, in a certain way.turin wrote:A RL WoW-addict I know said there was a level 70 cap... so you can't keep advancing endlessly, though pretty close to that.
You can't keep levelling at level 70, but you can keep getting better gear. Keep doing higher instances, keep getting better and better, and it will take a year to get real good gear. Then the next expansion pack comes and everything starts over again.
An instance is a dungeon where you go with a group of 5 to 25 people, to get gear and kill bosses. Raid instances (20 ppl or more), require you to be online at least 5 days a weak, mostly 7-12PM, to do that certain instance.
This is what I mean, advancing, and it takes a lot more time than reaching level 70. As I say, the fun/problems (how you look at it) really start when you reach the maximum level.
I quote from the link Sapient showed us:
Blizzard created a game that you simply can not win. Not only that, the only way to "get better" is to play more and more. In order to progress, you have to farm your little heart out in one way or another: either weeks at a time PvPing to make your rank or weeks at a time getting materials for and "conquering" raid instances, or dungeons where you get "epic loot" (pixilated things that increase your abilities, therefore making you "better").
I heartily encourage all you WoW fanatics to go and look at a little 'game' called Progress Quest, and see how much farming time it saves you. When it's something so repetitive, I just can't understand how anyone could play past level 10 or so.
