Cd Project

Post by Pie.matthew »

What about selling cds with the all the operating system types on it and also with all the mods and maps, etc on it. it can be for $2 us + p&h. It would be for people without internet, people who cant download much and people with no spare time to download TONS of maps. and what about bulk downloading all the maps cause i cant be F$%&ed downloading tons of maps over and over again.

No offense meant to you, but such a person (no internet) would be contributing nothing to the community, not even single player campaign data. Is that really something time/effort should be spent to make, and if so, who would actually want to do it?

IMHO it is a nice idea. It's just... someone has to do it... and the person will have to calculate costs vs benefits.

Costs = time to download the things, arrange them in directory, burn on CD, promote and sell, do the related paperwork.
Benefit = good feeling, maybe some bonus $$.

If there is someone who considers the result a possible profit, s/he can do it -- but do not expect anyone else to do it. The calculation may be different for different people, because "good feeling" part of equation is highly subjective.

BTW once I worked on a similar project; we downloaded a lot of materials freely available from web, and sold it on CDs, later on DVDs. It was completely legal, and the customers were fully aware that the materials are freely available. A few thousands copies of DVDs were sold for production price, with minimum profit. But in my situation, it was hundreds of things from about twenty different websites collected in one place, sorted in user-friendly menu, some of them preprocessed (a local copy of wikipedia without pictures, with hyperlinks adjusted so that it was browsable directly on DVD). The added value IMHO was so high that even people with access to internet had a motive to buy it.

In your project I think the main problem will be how to reach the customers.

I did start to compile some of the files, but as Viliam said it is time consuming, and it has not been my priority recently.
Feel free to make one on your own, in the link on my signature you can find the latest schema of the structure that I was building, if that may help you.

Such a thing takes a lot of time from people who could spend their time better by contributing to the development of the game.
If you have a dial-up connection, the best way to update Wesnoth is to ask a friend to download it for you, IMO. That's what I did until I had the ADSL too.
Having said that, if you want to do it, then go ahead. It sure is a good idea.

I recently made a simple CD for my friend, who is new to Wesnoth. I made a silly little autorun program asking whether you want to install the stable or dev version. Not hi tech, and Windows only, but hey, it worked, and it was easy.

Anyone who could edit autorun.ini files could make a simple CD that runs the Wesnoth 1.2.2 installer when inserted into a Windows machine. I don't know about Linux and Mac, but the installers for them could be put on too. There is no need to make a fancy CD filled with extras.

I suggest we all make a CD with Wesnoth on it to the best of our abilities and then give it to your local library. Sure, they won't all be the same and won't be flash but its getting Wesnoth out to the masses.

Yes, it sounds nuts, but it's simple enough.

Yes, but these CDs do not contain best maps and eras from campaign server. And for example latest OpenCD contains Wesnoth 1.0.1.

It would be nice to have a good CD version of full Wesnoth, if there would be a person who loves maintaining it, and has the necessary skills. But it is not necessary to have... almost same functionality can be gained by making a wiki page containing links to all "recommended" content. Then anyone can download that, burn it to CD, and give to friends. So... are there any volunteers to create and maintain such wiki page? (Because making a CD would require almost the same work.)
