Also: Wheel-locks are hot. Same era as the matchlock, and of better quality, but too complicated to be mass-produced.

I still don't like the modern look of the pistol-grip and trigger guard. The whole thing looks like fantasy-issue bazooka.
The dwarf looks pretty ok, the nose needs a bit more definition and forehead needs wrinkles. The eye wrinkles could be longer too.
I wouldn't put too much work into the runes, they won't be legible when you scale it down to 205x205:

Which is why I didn't actually put anything meaningful, and plus, they were fun to do. ;PSgt. Groovy wrote:I still don't like the modern look of the pistol-grip and trigger guard. The whole thing looks like fantasy-issue bazooka.

The wrinkles and nose definition I was expecting to be done when it's colored. But since I'm rather lacking in coloring abilities (both CG and freehand) I'll let someone else do that.

As for the pistol-grip and trigger guard... there is a thing on the Dragonguard sprite that looks like a pistol-grip.
Wheellocks make me say bad words.....at high volume.
I'm working on restocking a wheellock carbine repro for a friend of mine right now, and holy crap are they cantankerous SOB's.....for one thing the sear mechanism moves horizontally, not vertically like on other firearms....so you can't use a standard trigger/triggerplate, I'm having to fabricate everything from scratch.
and since you can't SEE inside the lock cavity when the lock is in it, you have to make a lot of blind guesses/adjustments to try and get the trigger to engage the sear properly.
AAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
And when fired, since they have a TON of moving parts, they foul like you wouldn't BELIEVE....
But, at least you don't have to worry about keeping the match lit with a wheellock....

I know it's a necro, but i found this thread on a bored trawl through Art Contribs looking for inspiration. It was just too well done and abandoned to pass up, so i've added some basic lines and flats to it. I plan to shade it eventually, too.
I intend, eventually, to make a portrait for the thunderer/thunderguard, too. I have something in the works, but it's not this good...
EDIT: needs a few fiddles, primarily moving the barrel so the top lines up with the bottom, and adding the wrinkles and lines suggested earlier in the thread.

I like the sketch and like what you've done, but i see a few things wrong with the outline.
- The perspective/angle on the handle looks awry
- The top of the gun doesn't quite line up, thought it's hard to judge properly
- IMO the belt buckle should be shifted to the right slightly, showing more of the belt on the left side. It doesn't look central at the moment (not that dwarven culture would necessarily shun asymetric styles).
- If you follow the bottom curve of his trigger arm, it almost goes in a circle.
- Why the tuft of ginger hair under his ear? Another dwarven fashion statement?
Of course, I know very little about how to draw, so take these suggestions lightly. It looks good!

I didn't draw the sketch, just to be clear.
The handle's a tough one. I think it's close enough for government work IYSWIM.
The gun barrel isn't in line, and moving ti is one of the fixes i have planned.
I agree about the belt. I might fiddle with it somehow, maybe broaden the body a little.
I don't see anything wrong with the trigger arm, tbh. Given the angle and clothing, it's about right.
The tuft of ginger hair is a little dragon earring, you can see it on the sketch. I might remove it.

Nice. To my untrained I see nothing wrong with it now (except possibly the light-blue colour of the chainmail, but again that might be a fashion thing).

Yeah, i might well desaturate that some.
And the perspective on the end of the grip is wrong. Nothing a bit of transform tool won't cure. Tonight or tomorrow.

Darker shadows would make it look more realistic, I suspect.

Yeah, the beard's a little undefined. I need to darken the lines, then darken the shading on it.
