Double faction era

Post by mrchadt »

With talk in other parts of the forum about which is the best 2 factions in 2vs2 games, I thought of an Era consisting of combinations of 2 factions in 1 from the default era.
eg. loyals and ocrs is one faction.
drakes and U.D. is another faction.
U.D. and loyals ...

What do others think?

Seems a bit of trouble for something that you can easily organize, and much more flexibly, in the pre-game chat. I usually look at what my team-mate is going to play in a 2vs2, and choose my faction accordingly... just as easy to make suggestions.

It should be simple to do.

Code: Select all

[era]
id=era_double_default
name= _ "Double Default"

{RANDOM_SIDE}

[multiplayer_side]
id=Loyalists_and_Rebels
name={MENU_IMG_TXT "human-loyalists/lieutenant.png~TC(1,magenta)" _"Loyalists and Rebels"}
type=Lieutenant
leader=Lieutenant,Swordsman,Pikeman,Javelineer,Shock Trooper,Longbowman,White Mage,Red Mage,Elvish Captain,Elvish Hero,Elvish Ranger,Elvish Marksman,Elvish Druid,Elvish Sorceress,White Mage,Red Mage,Elder Wose
random_leader=Lieutenant,Swordsman,Pikeman,Javelineer,Shock Trooper,Longbowman,Red Mage,Elvish Captain,Elvish Hero,Elvish Ranger,Elvish Marksman,Elvish Druid,Elvish Sorceress,Red Mage
recruit=Cavalryman,Horseman,Spearman,Fencer,Heavy Infantryman,Bowman,Mage,Merman Fighter,Elvish Fighter,Elvish Archer,Mage,Elvish Shaman,Elvish Scout,Wose,Merman Hunter
terrain_liked=gcsfFw
[ai]
recruitment_pattern=fighter,fighter,fighter,archer,mixed fighter,scout,fighter,fighter,archer,archer,mixed fighter,healer,scout
[/ai]
[/multiplayer_side]

# ...

[/era]
I added the values in default loyalists and default rebels. And so on for each pair of factions... Now someone has to complete this and playtest it.

That's 36 factions !
Maybe some macros would help ;)

15 I think. Still a lot, though.

Thanks for some interest here.
I wouldn't know how to continue with your start Viliam, thanks for putting in the effort. If someone with knowledge of how to continue with this and is interested enough in this idea it would be interesting to me to see how the factions match up. But if nobody is too interested so be it.

I make it 15 factions also, 6 choose 2. 6 possibilites for the first faction 5 for the second, divided by 2 as it doesnt matter in which order they are picked.

So, here it is. I hope there are no errors. Put this file to:
C:\Program Files\Wesnoth\userdata\data\campaigns

Please note that just because original factions were balanced, the double factions do not have to be balanced too. Maybe by joining opposite factions player gains big advantage, and by joining similar factions, player gains only small advantage.

Thankyou for that Viliam, it seems to work well. Not meaning to look a gift horse in the mouth, if thats the right expression, but there is no random option. To continue with strange expressions what I'm trying to say is I hope it's not a case of give a man an inch and he takes a mile.

Following what you said Viliam, on the subject of balance. I am interested to see if there is an imbalance when playing combinations of 2 factions as one does in 2vs2 games. Thanks again for your help.

Yes, I'm not sure Viliam has taken a mile, more picked up the baton and run a mile with it, for which I believe we are all very grateful. It certainly is a gift horse, however. And I too have (inappropriately or not) looked in its mouth, and unlike mr chadt I found the random tooth intact and fully able to chew.

I wrote a Perl script to construct "double" eras from existing factions; you can use it for user-made factions too. There is condition that each faction must be defined in a separate file, and all these files must be in the same directory (if this is not the situation, you can prepare it so in a temporary directory).

Here is again the "Double Default" era, and "Double Age of Heroes" era, constructed by this script.
