High bred? Are you serious? Trolls and Orcs are to archaic and illiterate to understand how to isolate paticular traits in their offspring. They wouldn't value gold or bright colors, nor would they allow a whelp to be in charge of the defences of a warlord.

Gold lining and sheets aren't. But hell that would be hideous to repair after a battle.
You know, in reality.

You have to think in terms of what the faction values. The Northeners value strength, power, and any means necessary. They're decent smiths and whatnot so you're best off having a large, powerful Troll with bulky muscles and makeshift steel weapons and armor. Basically a bipedal tank. Only lavishing colors should be the red eyes IMO.

It may be the same excuse with the lavinian's which is gold-painted armor.

Practically speaking, gold is not ideal as a material for weapons and armour - but if it was the only metal that was available in large amounts (if, for example, you live in a gold mine), it would not be unreasonable to use it anyway.
While it is heavy, that probably isn't much of an issue for a troll. And it's soft, but still harder than bare skin - with the advantage that, because of its softness, it can be worked cold. If I were about to charge into battle, and I were strong enough to move in a suit of golden plate armour, I'd rather wear it than not wear anything.

As I said...
Yes, gold is incredibly soft. But not as soft as unarmoured flesh.
Wouldn't you rather have weak armour, than no armour at all?
Assuming that you were a troll, that is, and therefore strong enough and clumsy enough not to be noticeable impeded by the weight?
I know I would - I realise that the ancient Celts had a reputation for fighting in the nude, but that's one of our traditions that I'm not keen to uphold!
Secondary point - Wesnoth is a fantasy game, set in a fantasy world. Maybe in that world, there is a metal with the colour of gold and the strength of iron? Brass looks similar to gold, if you don't look too hard - why couldn't there be another, similar-looking but harder metal?

I don't see a Troll's need of armor of the gold kind anyway. Their skin would be much thicker and stronger than the gold, so in essence it would be a decoration.

Yeah, it probably is, if you have a cow to hand.
But if you don't, it makes sense to use whatever is have available, rather than following in my ancestors' footsteps and trusting in luck and 'magical' blue paint to protect you.
I guess it boils down to the question, "Can Tristan/D_C provide a good justification for golden armour?".
If it's just for appearance, it's an amazingly bad idea, but if there's actually a rational explanation for it then fair enough.
