Adding user's multiplayer maps to mainline
I have a Idea too for "New maps of Wesnoth": The version 1.2 can have (when the version is open) some created maps from forum user's (example: me
) and not only the maps of the wesnoth team who had created
multiplayer maps.
EDIT: split from a totally unrelated topic that had the word "map" in it.

multiplayer maps.

Wrong sort of maps, you two. And don't double post. There are times when it's appropriate. Until you know what those times are, don't even consider.
I'm not locking this, since I know you two will just start something else I'll have to lock, but I don't think any new maps (particularly hideously unbalanced ones [no offense, new, but I've seen your work]) will be packaged with mainline for a while. As in, ever. If Doc really hammers away at a few maps, and gets them tuned to the MP Dev's satisfaction, maybe. But new's Africa map isn't going anywhere fast.
Anything you make can, in theory, go on the campaign server, so don't complain that you aren't being given a chance. Most games require that you hunt down and install manually all mods and add-ons. Consider yourselves lucky.

To clarify Maeglin's post, multiplayer maps are included in game or rejected based on the map's quality, not so much because of who made it. New ones are added from time to time.new wrote:...some created maps from forum user's...
If someone came along and made original maps of the same or better quality as our current maps, those maps would probably be included. We are always looking for talented contributors to add to the development team. Unfortunately many users overestimate their own level of talent.
Feel free to PM me if you start a new terrain oriented thread. It's easy for me to miss them among all the other art threads.

Amen to that, EleazarEleazar wrote:Unfortunately many users overestimate their own level of talent.

sort of on this topic, sort of off but I was wondering...
Do all the maps included in the game have to be balanced?
Personally I'd prefer a bit more variety and a few more unbalanced maps. These could be used against ai's or in specific factions versus specific factions, or set up for 3 on 1 sieges and such.
I guess I'd like more maps with larger sections of certain terrains clumped together and realize that these can easily unbalance a map to favor certain units.(a section of forest will favor elves) To me gameplay is very similar across many different maps. Some of the newer larger maps are a little better, imo, but I usually play one on ones. Any comments appreciated.

All the stuff included with the mainline is a kind of showcase for the game I guess, so having unbalanced or material that isn't easily accessible (as in "how is that supposed to be played?") in there is problematic. Most maps included with the game are of the straightforward "tournament-style" variety because that's the most obvious way to play multiplayer.whitewater wrote:Do all the maps included in the game have to be balanced? It's very annoying to see some people just clamouring for their content to be included, just because it was made by their own holy selves, while they wholly neglect the quality of all the content that has been made for mainline and some of which is distributed via the campaign server only. This project would never have come this far if it had just been a vehicle for egotism by the developers, and it's embarrassing to see new people try to harness it as such.

There are also random maps which provide all the variety you want at the expense of balance, and wesbowl as a showcase for WML-driven scenarios.
People have never had a problem getting their custom maps, scenarios and campaigns distributed over the campaign server, which is a much better forum for content that caters to specific tastes or audiences. That said, I wouldn't mind if the MP community established a few more styles and if some example scenarios then became mainline, but that is also a question of evolving quality of content - the further you digress from the beaten path, the more likely you'll be facing a lot of balance and playability issues.
If you play similarly on all maps, then you're missing out on something. Really. I'm not the most competitive player, but there are significant differences in the way you develop your position on all the maps. Try observing good players of matched skill and you'll see it.whitewater wrote:To me gameplay is very similar across many different maps.

I think this should not be a problem, if the map is clearly marked as such. E.g. "Revolution, 4vs1, player 1 is the king, players 2-5 are rebels and should be in one team."whitewater wrote:Do all the maps included in the game have to be balanced? But the maps should be first tested on campaign server, and then included only if they gain popular support.

It is interesting to read some people post who don't realize that almost all of todays active developers where at one point merely noobs who posted their content to the forum for other people's benefit. Thus, most of the content that is in wesnoth is originally from forum users! The way to get your content included is not to try and argue about how great this or that bit of content is and hence why it should be included, but merely to continue to contribute and pay attention to the feedback that you get to learn on how to improve it. If you start providing content that is generally viewed as being of high quality, it will likely be included. Do this enough, and you will likely get invited to be a Developer. Then you will have the fun of deciding how much time to spend explaining to someone what is wrong with the content that they are proposing that YOU put into wesnoth. You will have to decide if it is worth the effort to try and correct them so that they become a useful contributor and eventually a developer in their own right, or if time trying to correct them is just wasted since they are too narcistic to pay attention to constructive criticism.
On the other hand, you can complain that your stuff is so Awesome that only blind people couldn't see what a "1337 H4x0r" you are and hope that this convinces people to pay attention to you. Clearly this is the best way to convince a developer that looking over your content and providing constructive criticism will be time well spent.

On that note, I'm locking this. The only thing that I see coming of this is severe embarassment on new's part when he says something extremely silly in my stomping grounds here. (For those of you unfamiliar with Wesnoth community history, I too was once a noob, and am only now a moderator because I volunteered to police the Ideas forum.)
