If you swing 20 times with 70% chance to hit, then it totals to about a 12% chance to get four misses in a row within that series; if you get a lot of four-misses, it's only because you're doing a lot of attacks...Vexator wrote:Statistically, there is a 0.81% chance to miss four times in a row with a hit percentage of 70% (this is from a spreadsheet i put together, you can find it in the thread "Is Wesnoth too hard to play?")
It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.
I've often cursed my bad luck (the mage missed ALL THREE TIMES!? WHY?), but when I check the damage dealt and taken it's usually very close to average. It's not a glitch in the game, but rather in human perception. Bad luck is much more memorable than good luck, and we tend to take it for granted when good luck smiles upon us. Try to always expect the worst, and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'm not sure about this forum, but quite often on forums that I've frequented that frown on chatspeak and are multi-lingual: Chatspeak is incredibly hard to understand for non-native english speakers, which can result in communication problems, which can result in unnessicary arguements and flaming because of chatspeak.Doc Paterson wrote:Funny that you should be the one telling someone else to write properly; the grammar and syntax of your above responses are pretty gosh darn awful. I'm thinking you should go back to the MLA Dojo.Thrawn wrote:
spell properly, and don't use numbers for words...it's frowned upon here.

Honestly, why do people like to make such fusses about trivial things like this? It's petty and ridiculous to assume that we're all going to be writing in perfect English on a fogging game forum (where many of us are from non-English-speaking countries). Anyone who really wants to be a grammar hound ought to, as JC said, first examine the plank in their own eye.The important thing is that we're communicating, so really, I think we should focus on the ideas and concepts, and not nitpick the presentation.
I'd assume it's the same case on this forum.
(this post might come a little late in the topic

After playing the game more, working on my strategies and becoming a better player, I totally agree with the comments above.Tmoiy wrote:Bad luck is much more memorable than good luck, and we tend to take it for granted when good luck smiles upon us. Bad luck is a lot easier to remember than the good luck

If you want to see your luck even out - take the rouges and thieves from Siege of Elsenfar, take care of them and promote them to assassins. Nothing kills them except royal guards and knights (in the day time) and undead.
I use them to soften up trolls and level 2 orcs so my other troops can level. Using the poison throwing knives they always deal good damage, plus the poison keeps the trolls from regenerating. They build experience for your other troops a lot more reliably than the old wizard dude - he has a bad tendency to smoke what ever he shoots at.
I was doing that in the Lost General on my last campaign and one got cut off and was surrounded by trolls and troll whelps. Every one of them took a swing at him, and he only took one knock on the noggin and came thorough it fine.
I had 7 level ups in that scene. Plus! they have an upkeep of zero, I figure they save me bunches of gold along.
They do very not nice things to shock troopers also.

Hey, well that was me. Actually, I was the one doing chat speak, and I was responded with the whole "frowned upon" thing. I was saying something like.I'd assume it's the same case on this forum.
"so i waz jst wondrin if any1 here could tel me how u were able 2 do so-and-so" That was basically how it went. I do not use that language anymore, at least not in the Wesnoth community.

I don't know, but I do know that every time it comes up, I have no idea what it's about, so I have renamed it.Zhukov wrote:What is it about this thread that compells newbies to keep resurrecting it?
Maybe the name will discourage newbies too

11) The leader slide. Leaders can modify the attack strength of units of lesser or equal level to the leader. This mod can happen at any time. Slide the leader down 1 or 2 hexes at a time, allowing attacks to occur from units they currently modify. Example below.
Actually leadership only applies to units who have a lesser level than the leader unit. Units of the same level with the leader do not gain the leadership bonus.

I think people tend to remember neither good nor bad luck unless it comes at a critical time. If that bad luck or good luck results in a major tactical victory or defeat, then it's remembered. Otherwise, it might be noted, but not in a major way.
Of course, sometimes you want "bad" luck, like when facing down a horde of walking corpses. You WANT to injure them, and not kill them, so you won't have an army of them pounding down a single paladin to death!

At one time this thread was named “My Tactics. And I think it was a valid title! When you're new you read all this stuff about resistances and time of day bonus and leadership bonus and defense values but it takes a while to gel.
When I was new I really didn't understand why you could encircle a troll on hills at night and he would not only live through 2 rounds but kill 2 of your units while he was at it. I mean, he's only got 78 hit points and you've got 200 HP of damage there – there just has to be something wrong with these dice!
When you're new tactics is circle the enemy and click OK. Advanced tactics is encircle the enemy, cross your fingers then click OK!
I learned quite a bit from this thread. Things like there is a first rush and if you can be patient enough to live through that you'll prevail, tactics wins scenes but you need strategy for the campaign.
And Higher Game, roger that on holding corners with weak units instead of strong ones for walking corpses. I had to start over many times because a grand knight or champion died to WC's. I now hold corners and points with elvish shamans. They hardly ever kill a WC so they only get attacked a few times, and if they do die they turn into a WC which stops the attack on that area of the line and only costs 16 gold.
You won't read that tip anywhere else on the forum! I read these forums for hours and no where did it mention that your loyal thieves will advance to assassins which are powerful very durable units.
I think the title of the thread should be changed to something a little more newbie friendly.
