So, basically - the mermen fight better, but they only fight at full strength in water, while the nagas fight at full strength, or at least at closer to full strength, on land. Thus, mermen are better in water, not because they have an advantage in water but because they have a disadvantage elsewhere?

It's really quite simple turin.

Mermen deal more damage than Nagas. Mermen have essentially the same hp as Nagas (Fighters have more, Hunters have less but deal even more damage). Movement is irrelevant to the actual battle, but the MP are only 1 off anyway (Mermen 6, Nagas 7). Their defense in their preferred terrain is equal, so the advantage in preferred terrain between the units belongs to the Mermen.

When out of water the Naga fares much better with better movement (quite significant), and better defense. Though, since this is not his preferred terrain, sending Nagas to fight on land simply makes them subpar land units. The fact that they have the option to be subpar land units gives them an advantage over Mermen who are very poor land units. This comparison plays no part in how they units fare in water as they are out of water.

So, to sum up, Mermen fight better in water. Nagas defend and move better over land. Mermen still deal more damage on land than Nagas. The damages don't change.

Not exactly, but close enough. In fact, so close that it doesn't really matter. :P

Okay. That's a convoluted approach and it leaves Mermen more capable damage-wise on land than I'd like, but it answers the question.

Thanks.
