Battle for Tidestone: web-based strategy RPG (in wesnoth?)

Post by bryanbr »

I have started a game called Battle for Tidestone, which is a massively multiplayer online strategy and role-playing game. See my SF site here for more information and screenshots:

http://tidestone.sourceforge.net

Most of the game will be GPLed. As it's an Ajax application, all of the UI the code is actually downloaded while playing the game.

I've used a tool called AndroMDA for writing the backend. Quite interesting tool, I haven't had to write a single line of database interaction code. AndroMDA generates all of that for me.

I'd like to thank the artists here for excellent work on the units and terrain that I am using in the game. I will provide a link in the game's website to Wesnoth and accredation in the source files.

I have previously founded and written a game called Merchant Empires (http://www.merchantempires.com), so rest assured that I am familiar with how to do this.

I'm still not sure on the title for the game, might change it to something else. I'd like to situate it in the Wesnoth universe.

Tidestone has entirely different gameplay: there is no tactical element like wesnoth. The item and unit creation and the combat are modeled from a game called Pocket Kingdom, http://www.pocket-kingdom.com. I am adding a strategic resource ownership and management system to the game. The "game board" will be modeled after a simplified (hex) version of something like what you see in http://www.timeofdefiance.com. Visualize a huge playing area that requires real days of time to move across.

If anyone is interested in hosting Battle for Tidestone, please drop me an email at bryanbrun@yahoo.com. At least initially I will host it on my DSL but 512K uplink only supports so many users.

Do you have a place where we can try out this game. I think it sounds interesting, but the sf site doesn't have a link to the code or the game.

It's not in the least bit playable at this time. I'm working on the map interface right now. As you can see from the screenshots the item creation and party interfaces are useable and that's all that's functional. Fortunately, the existing game mechanics are very simple so there really isn't much beyond the map interface and the combat code and simple combat playback that is required to have a playable game. Of couse, I will add more areas: player messaging, news, scores, item auctions, etc.

Also, I don't have anywhere to host the game right now. Still considering hosting it on my DSL line. If you know anyone that would like to host this game send me an email.

I posted a screenshot on the sourceforge site above of the map interface if anyone is interested.

At some point I'd like to do a turn based game like BFW. I think that the web interface would be a good fit for a game like BFW. You could play a multiplayer game against other people at a relaxed pace, taking a turn a day. You'd also have a guarantee against cheating b/c all of the data is stored on the server.

Yo. In order to get rid of the "pink" coloration that we use as our "variable" color for teams, you might want to talk to Darth Fool. He has cooked up something that does that already with an OSS program called "ImageMagic".

Said something can batch-process the whole set of images, and replace the pink with a deep red (or anything, really), which looks much better.

And thanks for your compliments on the imagery; we all appreciate the encouragement. :)

Jetryl, I'm using images under the units and terrain directory. I apologize if I can't see what you are referring to by "color for teams". Where is the pink coloration on the unit and terrain images?

I can barely play it. The in-town mnus are great, but as soon as I went adventuring I started having problems:

My people sometimes go off the board and I have no idea where they are.

I cannot talk or fight the outlaws that stand aroung the map. The best thing that happened was that I went right on top of them.

The towers were the same: how do I fight?

Lastly, I was unable to experiment because after a while the slow game speed started to annoy me. 1 move takes 1 second; is there any way to speed it up?

There is none on the old images from 1.0, which I presume you're using. I *had* presumed that you were getting your images from our web-based unit list, or our SVN repository at gna.org, but if you're not seeing any magenta (and I know your post was in march), then you're clearly getting them from 1.0 (or earlier).

1.2 will have team-coloration on almost all of the units.

I've taken the game offline. Quite honestly the game's structure just wasn't working for a web browser.

I might redo it as a pure tactical combat game, similar to Wesnoth, but until then I think the case is closed on this game in its current form.
