It´s better than the previous, but please make it more visible in the topleft area.

Or we could just use the shield, no letter. It is a pretty looking shield as-is. Maybe add the word "Wesnoth" at the height of the lower third of the shield.

raster icons == bad idea. we need a SVG icon. every desktop i use except windows uses them, and they rock.

As of now, I'm thinking the gold W looks the best. I like how crisp the icon looks on the right in the first post on this page. The other one is too bland and hard to see. Your original idea was better in my opinion. I like the really crisp shield and gold W. It looks pro.

Why do we need a letter at all? I'd prefer just the shield to the shield with a strangelooking W on top.

Just because the old icon was a big W doesn't mean this one has to have one.

I need to make a pair of crossed swords to go behind the shield, really. Pekka's made blades that can probably be used verbatim, but the hilt is the issue. None have yet been made at the right angle.

The old, red "W" icon, is it used for certain OS, only? My avatar is the (desktop-) icon of BFW on OS X.

The icon should be immediately recognisable as representing Wesnoth. The shield on its own is a bit too generic to do that.

It might even be nice to use one the graphics for one of the units (Delfador?)...

Maybe it would be good to use the same icon on all the desktops. The Windows icon is the same since ages, and isn't very good. The new proposal would be a good change.

If we're changing the Wesnoth icon, I think it would be a very, very good idea to make them in Tango style:

http://www.tango-project.org

All the cool kids are doing it! :D

Seriously, though, this is the iconset that will be the default for all the major Linux distributions soon (Ubuntu, Suse, etc.), it might even spread to KDE and other platforms one day, and it has clear style guidelines outlined on the website. If not the default, I think there should at least be made a Tango-version of the icon.

* windows & mac use raster icons (the vast majority of wesnoth users) It would be difficult to achieve the desired textured look with vector anyway.

* mac icons are 128x128 pix. until Vista or Leopard comes out, this is the minimum size an icon should be created at.

* tango-style totally clashes with the "look and feel" of Wesnoth. Feel free to make you own tango variant, but it will not be official.

* the "W" used on this tread is not good looking. No amount of coloring and/or filtering will make it into an acceptable icon.

* it's the packagers that apply the icons to their binaries, thus the inconsistancies
Feel free to PM me if you start a new terrain oriented thread. It's easy for me to miss them among all the other art threads.
