Marksmanship Discussion.

Post by Noy »

Since smokemjags wanted to discuss this topic, here it is.

Our new faction has a unit (currently called the heavy fighter) that has an a melee attack with marksmanship. Really we've had a bit of trouble coming up with a name for it. Swordsmanship had some troubles with it (not all weapons are swords) so go nuts. Also once we get an good name the thread will self destruct/lock.

precision (or precise), deft, skilled or something like "Melee Master." Perhaps just "mastery."

Can't get any better than that.

I still like finesse.
Precision still sounds like it belongs to a ranged type of attack.

Here's a fun one:
"Inexorable"

Call it an inexorable attack.
(It means something not easily persuaded.)
An inexorable attack would be an attack that is not easily detered or warded off... sounds pretty fitting for an attack that ignores terrain advantages and manages to have 60% or better to always hit.

More ideas:

strike-true, resolute aim, dodgeproof, steadystrike, perfect aim, focused

Of these, I think "resolute aim" conveys the meaning best while applying to both bows and blades. It may not sound as cool as some of the other choices, though.

I like finesse and focused and deft.

I'll go ahead and suggest "expertise" and "deadly" as well.

Question: Are we going for a name that could apply to both melee and ranged attacks, or for a new name for the melee attack, keeping marksman for the ranged attack?

I think we shouldn't split the special artificially, so I said the first.

I don't think that anything with the work "aim" in it is going to work. That sounds even more range-oriented than "marksman" does.

My favorite so far is "precise". Although "precision" does seem to sound range-oriented to me, "precise" doesn't for some reason.

You think aim sounds too ranged? Hmm... in that case I'll change my vote to "focused." (While "precise" is accurate in conveying meaning, it doesn't sound as aggressive to me.)

I like 'precise' the most.

'accuracy' is good IMHO.

"Aggressive" sounds like another good term for it. :)

Aggressive seems to lean heavily on melee.

I'm in favor of seperate names for ranged and melee versions...
But if one name is going to cover both... I'm in favor of accuracy.

I'd rather see the ranged named one thing(marksmanship or accuracy) and the melee named another(finesse, precision, or something else)

Precise and accurate mean two different things. You would want the ability to be called Accurate. I think this would be a good change if it is going to start being applied to melee attacks as well as ranged. There's absolutely no reason to have two abilities that do exactly the same thing.
