Undead Faction (sprite adjustment)

Post by Maester Pixel »

Hmm, today while playing Wesnoth I noticed something about one of the Undead faction units while fighting them, now it seems apparent that this little fellow needs a visual makeover. Who am I talking about? The bat unit of course.
The little critter needs to keep his mouth shut so that he can open it fully when he trys to engage his opponent, right, so I fixed it. Now what I needed to do in orded to accomplish just that, I had to erase the mouth portion and basically the entire face to reconstruct it so that the ears & mouth would resemble something similar to a real life bat, not that the original version did not try to achieve it, I just couldn't stand its mouth being opened like that any longer, I just had to fix it, not that the sprite itself needed to be fixed... heh

Besides I think my version turned out pretty darn well considering that this is my first time actually drawing a bat.. er vampire bat.
If you want my fixed version feel free to do as you please, I don't care.

Yeah, I think we can use it. If you could port the changes over to the other 2 frames, and the 3 frames of the blood bat, which isn't much work, I'll put it in - I'm somewhat ambivalent about this change, and because of that I'd rather not do that work myself.

I'll admit that I was slightly partial to the goofy old "tube body" these fellows had, not unlike http://www.grimmy.com/images/MGG_Archiv ... GG0319.gif

However, I really won't mind seeing that go.

I must say that I prefer the old one. The new one looks...fat. Also, I always thought that the white things on the bat's face were the eyes (or parts of them), not teeth.

It does look fat. Also, shouldn't it have feet?

They were its teeth. And too me it's not too fat, and looks much nicer than the old one. If you look, the new one has some sort of feet, and much more realistic than feet in old
if you look here, you see legs are attached to membrane of wings, as in this drawing.

Good job!

Hm... this new one seems more realistic-looking, but I prefer the old.

I like the new one, the mouth is a definite improvement. Although perhaps the stomach could do with a bit of trimming.

Could be a bit thinner IMHO, too. if you do the Blood Bat, though, the fatness would be fitting

Take the old body + the new face and voila!!!

You've got yourself a good looking bat.

Remember, you don't have to use it. Believe me its not like I would care either way because I'm just trying to help here. Anyway Jetryl I'm way ahead of ya, I just got done spriting a walking animation for the little guy, I even also had time to adjust the bats wings so that it connects to the lower portion of the bottom wings, now all thats left is the attack/ defend frame and the level 2 unit, which is not a problem since I'm off from work today.

I don't think fat is the exact term, because its not fat its just big.

Realism was the direction I was heading in, thanks for seeing that. The picture that I used for reference is located here, you can also find it on google by typing the keywords "bat".

Yeah smart thinking, seriously though not much would be accomplished by copying & pasting, but it does save time.

I like it because it is more realistic but the flieing animation is perhaps with two frames a little bit snatchy.
This girl, this boy, They were part of the land. What happens to the places we used to tend?
She's a hard one to trust, And he's a roving ghost. Will you come back, will you come back, Or leave me alone?

Hmm, maybe adding a middle frame will help make it less stagnant.
The neck fur has slightly changed in this image, I wanted the unit to kinda resemble this bat's fur. If you "can" pinpoint the changes I made by yourself then I don't need to explain myself, now do I?

For some odd reason I'm not pleased with it, maybe its because the animation is a little dull.

It's because the body should be moving as well as the wings.

Also, I'm wondering what an actual vampire bat looks like...
