Rain effect wiki page
I'm adding a rain effect example into UsefulWMLFragments. I need to include the rain tiles themselves and got told that I should post them here so I can link to them. The page itself will be up in a day or so.
EDIT: The page is somewhat up at http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/Rain_effect.

Uh, do you have any screenshots showing what this would look like in-game?

Isn´t the weather theme already discussed?
I´m not sure.
Sorry for this maybe harsh words, but:
In my opinion it is against the KISS philosophy.
And it takes power from the PC.
But your graphics are great
(from wich scenario is this screenshot?)
I´m not sure.

It has been discussed, and some people have thought it a bad idea, and some haven't. So I just went and did it to see how it looks and works.toms wrote:Isn´t the weather theme already discussed?

Yes, that's true, and quite a big problem. Note that I'm not suggesting that something like this would be added to mainline Wesnoth, it's just there to show a way to add rain if some campaign developer wishes to do so.toms wrote:And it takes power from the PC. :(
Thanks!toms wrote:But your graphics are great :)
Scenario 8 from RotL. Note that you don't see the rain in the lite version, so you need to get the full one.toms wrote:(from wich scenario is this screenshot?)

I don't see how KISS has anything to do with weather effects. If units had a different movetype in the rain it might be a KISS issue.toms wrote:Sorry for this maybe harsh words, but:

Better graphics are not against KISS unless somehow make it harder to understand gameplay.
Feel free to PM me if you start a new terrain oriented thread. It's easy for me to miss them among all the other art threads.

Ok, this´d be good.majestyk wrote:Agreed. Probably this should be selectable in preferences, like in most modern games. As long as this does not influence the game mechanics I think it's a good idea to add some graphical bells and whistles.
Cheers,

The rain has no influence, has it?

If I wanted to have the feature in I would start with no change to the game mechanics. This makes it much easier to handle since it does not require re-balancing and you can use it on all existing maps just as a graphical gimmick, maybe even on a random basis. If you make it affect gamplay you would have to either re-balance all existing maps, or limit it to new maps.
Generally, the more changes, the more people (including devs) will be against it. If it turns out well, changing the dynamics of the gameplay could be a second step, for example to add more randomness to multiplayer-matches and campaigns.

I don't support it having an effect on gameplay, but if it doesn't, what is the point of having it at all? It would be kind of confusing if it was raining all the time but you still got the lawful/chaotic bonuses.
Also, it doesn't make sense to me for a thunderstorm to last for more than one or two turns.

This looks like a very interesting addition. Not really sure what's wrong with adding weather just for mood-setting and can be toggled off for users that dislike it or have slower computers...
I can't find the link at the moment, but maybe someone should add "this doesn't apply to the UI design" to the KISS philosophy section if it already isn't there...
