Okay, in the terrain folder, I see forest tiles with no background and transitions, and tiles with backgrounds that are multi-hex. Which do I need to do? Both kinds?

The mutihex forest tiles have transparent bg. The tropical forest has not been converted to multihex yet. Look at the normal forest or snow forest.

there's snow-forest-tile, snow-forest2,3&4, and snow-forest-castle images. I do all of these different types?

Have a go at the normal ones first. The castle special case tiles can be made after the normal ones are done.

Your first tree was brilliant. It's a shame it doesn't fit Wesnoth standards. Your newer work seems quite good for the game.
