// digression from top to bottom
@Turin & Neo: well, I suppose people that is usually the case maybe, but it wasn't for me, and it definately wasn't for my brother. I'll use his exapmle since it's more:
My brother used to be rather chubby, right on the borderline of fat. I used to always be able to run away from him(being rather slim), he was slow as hell. Around when I got in highschool, therefore when my brother was around 16-17, he got fed up with this(I guess), and started working out almost everyday. after a couple years he was strong as heck, I could still beat him on distance run, but he was getting fast too. Then he decided he wanted to join the grenadiers(swiss equivalent of marines/btw, military service is mandatory here) where distance running is basically sinonymous with waking up, so he started training on that too. He's now completed about half his military training(he got into grenadiers btw).
He used to be maybe resilient, but that's about it. Now I would put his traits as Strong, Quick, Resilient, in that order.

the first part that Turin said....no idea what you're talking about. can't understand it >_< try again now.

If you are a mage, you will not work a whole lot on fighting skills, and instead will study a lot. Under your system, this would mean you get the intelligent trait. However, all mages study like this. However, it wouldn't make sense for all mages to get the intelligent trait. Even though all mages are more intelligent than the average person, this is not reflected in their traits - it is reflected in their stats, and in the flavor of the unit. So, the mages' having studied is not what gives them their traits. What is it, then? I don't see why mages would go and start working out at the gym, or practicing long-distance running. They're trying to be mages, not warriors. So, whatever traits they have won't come from what they've done, they'll come from how innately quick, smart, strong, resilient they are. The naturally smart ones will pick stuff up better than the other mages, even though they're all studying the same amount. The quick ones will run a tiny bit quicker than the the other mages, not because they train themselves at it, but because they have longer legs, or something like that. But the mages do not control what traits they get under this system.

Did that explain it?

Yeah, I get your point.
1. The example was just to show that a person's traits(RL) are dependent alot on nurture, and not just nature.

Regarding the game, I still think that it wouldn't hurt to choose the traits of the hero. It just makes sense that in a game you can choose who/how you are. Also, if you choose the traits, unless you're daft, you'll choose traits that are most fitting to that unit. And it would make sense that a unit that has fitting traits rises to become a leader, no?
Nonetheless, I think it might be too much of a complication to the game.
Main point is, leaders should have traits, because it doesn't make sense that a lvl2 leader unit is weaker than the same lvl2 unit you bought.
