New "wild elf" faction

You can look in the far east faction thread, near the end, there is an *alpha* version for download. Only has 9 units though, and they are all recruitable, because it would make it easier to debug.Steel Will wrote:whats the soonest time the 5 and 6 human factions are available for downloading

Good afternoon!
1. I may have misunderstood, but a long-range attack with berserker is way overpowered. It would basically have a guaranteed kill against ~75% of all units.
2. There's also a (proposed) ancient Egyptian faction. I think it'll be called Misraim, or maybe Kemet. It hit a snag because of graphics, but I'll get more seriously on it as soon as I have time (school's started).
Otherwise, I don't know, I'm not a big fan of elves, so... But more factions can't hurt. I always thought elves were evil, or at least semi-evil, so these wild elves are more along my own opinions.

About Dark elves :
As a faction, I'd have to read more closely the thread. I don't really like the lizard rider idea.
As a concept :
Closer to how I see elves, but I don't see why they should be cave-dwellers.
The deep heart of a forest, where it is soggy, and swampy, and filled with old trees and all manner of things : that is far more creepy than a cave.
Creepy is the word, I see elves as creepy, assassins lying in wait in the woods to shoot arrows in your back, cruel and deadly-skilled swordsmen, and dark mages who use the forces of nature and the ferocity of animals to do their bidding. As such, I dislike either wood elves or high elves as concepts, I like the creepiness of dark elves, but they are too exotic.
Ultimately, wild elves are the closest to my opinions. Woodsmen, rough and tough, from the dark heart of the woods, with both deadly, precise skill and raw, sick vitality. Capable both of cool-calculated plans and cold cruelty, as well as ferocious savagery, all with a good dose of the sinister and macabre. I'm starting to like the wild elves. Downplay a little the dancer/animal side and highlight more the cruel, calculated side with elegant, scary weapon skills rather than savagery alone, and let's not forget some dark magic, and it's them...

Just so we're clear here: Sidhe are not Elves. Elves are from Germanic mythology, Sidhe are from the Celtic; specifically, Irish. They no more belong in Wesnoth than...griffons.

In terms of strict word derivation, yes. And in terms of where they were often found living, perhaps.xtifr wrote:Just so we're clear here: Sidhe are not Elves. Elves are from Germanic mythology, Sidhe are from the Celtic; specifically, Irish. They no more belong in Wesnoth than...griffons. :)
It is arguable, though, that the "Elves" of Tolkien and much other modern fantasy are influenced by the Sidhe as much as by the Elves of Norse myth -- with a healthy dose of imagination thrown in!

@ EP: you forgot dark elves
I think that before making a lot of new factions, you should just finish those that already exist. Or complete imperial era with other factions, not only humans one, but also ancient elves, orcs, etc...

Yeah, he does. I hope.
I really doubt dark elves will ever get in, since they've been rejected before, but I could be wrong...

You fail to understand that they were rejected because of the un-Wesnothish concept, not because of any lack of art.ILikeProgramming wrote:Perhaps they would... Now that neorice is doing the art.

And Jormungandr's portraits nailed them secure. I love the slighty oriental armour in the fighter. That and the symbols fit them well.

I don't know, but I sometimes wonder if Turin calls things "un-Wesnothian" if they're not found in or were not an inspiration for Tolkien.Casual User wrote:Why are Dark Elves un-Wesnothish ?
Well, actually Dark Elves are found in Tolkien:
1) Orcs were bred from Elves captured by Morgoth.
2) Any elf who never set forth on the journey to Valinor was called a "Dark Elf" -- "Moriquendi" in Elvish.
These Dark Elves seem to combine Tolkien's Dark Elves and Tolkien's Orcs, with a healthy dose of imagination.
