Odd as it might sound, try shifting the colors to a dark grey/brown. Just see how it looks.

Honestly, I think the hair (or head fur) on your latest sprite needs some greater definition. Right now it kind of looks like a hat-especialy on in the in-game image! Add that to his skirt like bottom fur and his shawl like shoulder fur... He comes off as a bit of an old-granny-troll.

The images are looking good, though I prefered the standing trolls to the squating one!
