more seriously, where is GIMP did you get those effects? (mine didn't come with any kind of help files)

...is this better?
@Jetryl--I suppose I did what you mentioned with the other layer and all, and I found the hue&contrast things, but they made the picture look odd, and didn't solve the color undynamicness.

The knee is pretty bad. It doesn't look like a knee at all.
I'll try to find a pic of a knee (weird assignment) to help you out. Maybe Jet or someone can give some helpful advice before then.
I really like this picture though, I've liked it from the start, so I'm really trying to help you make it the best you possibly can.

The problem with the knee, IMHO, doesn't have anything to do with the knee. It has to do with the piece of cloth on the left side of the knee that looks like it should fall off, but doesn't.
I also would advise removing the lens flare. Even changed as you have done, it adds nothing and looks stupid. IIRC, Jetryl's advice on lens flares was: never use.

Yes, 100% opacity is important, but set the color to a dark enough color. For starters, try JET BLACK, and move down from there. Make sure you use a solid, round brush (not one with blurred edges), and make sure you don't have some spurious pressure-sensitivity setting on.Thrawn wrote:so I just do that and than merge the layers? Because as I say, the brush, even with 100% opacity never gives me a dark enough line.Jetryl wrote: The simplest and best way to do this is to trace over all the lines in the entire drawing, into a new layer, with the brush (absolutely NOT the pencil) tool.
Also, don't merge the lineart with layers below - I never do, except as a final step to export the image, and I always make sure to keep a copy saved without the layers merged.
HERE: CUBIC is what you want.Thrawn wrote:???Jetryl wrote: Also, make sure that you never, ever resize the picture using anything other than "Bicubic interpolation". Nearest Neighbor will produce precisely the problems that I am seeing here.
what is this, where would I find it--I just scale image.

Watch as I say things to other people, listen as I say them to you. You can learn something about how to scale your images down to 205x205 pixels in this very thread. You might already know this, but it's useful nonetheless.Ranger M wrote:Jetryl is tutoring people nowDarth Fool wrote: And, of course, getting tutored by Jetryl is not a bad idea.. Finds it, twice

EDIT: realises is derailing, and decides to stop after Jetryl's reply (also realises is talking in third person, and how strange it must look)
Both points are explained here:Ranger M wrote: Finds it, twicethe one in prefereces I get, but what is interpolation? (it has the same options, and is in the tool options dialogue box when scale is select.)

If these are unclear explanations, please tell me. I want to be able to confidently refer people to this tutorial in the future when this subject comes up, because it's come up too often.
Re: elvish clothing question
I've been wanting to ask... would it be right to say that elves wear some sort of lamellar/brigandine armour?. It seems easy to dye and to mantain compared to most armours, and it is also lighter, which i think fits the Elves.Jetryl wrote:Basically, their armor is a mix of metal and leather, but is painted/dyed green, brown, and grey, for purposes of camouflage.Thrawn wrote:I'm starting to draw elves, but I can't tell what the fighter line is wearing. It looks like armour, with the pads at knees and all, but its green. Am I percieving wrong, do elves just fashion green armour, or is it some sort of leather armour?

I'm the one you needed then!Ranger M wrote:very clear, and well explained, but I have seen this before so my opinion is biased.
What we need is someone who has never heard of this before to look at it, then they can give a verdict (i'll try pursuading my brother tomorrow)

I didn't have a clue about this interpolation, but I still found Jetryl's tutorial perfectly clear.
It's nice that you can be helpful in art even if you don't understand anything about it.
