I would recommend trying:

Spearman cost increased from 14 to 15.
OR
Spearman melee reduced from 7-3 to 6-3

Calvaryman cost increased from 17 to either 18 or 19.
AND
Calvaryman receives either ranged 6-1 or 8-1 crossbow.

The idea is to make loyalists just a little more reliant on their diverse/large unit set, since a faction of 8 units shouldn't rely so much on just 2 or 3. I believe this can be accomplished by taking some of the emphasis off of the Spearman and making the Calvaryman a little more powerful-expensive and less 'spammy' when also taking into account its recent loss of (-)4 HP.

I think the bowman will get the right amount of use then and the fencer will be recruited sometimes as well.

Good! At last, someone has presented an argument for the change instead of just assuming it was needed. So, how does it hold up? What do people think?

If the intention is to make the Bowman recruited more often, I guess increasing the Spearman's cost from 14 to 15 would do just that.

Both ideas have been brought up before and shot down as being too large of nerfs

this is interesting, but really unneeded now that the cav has been nerfed already

fencer is used plenty enough already....
