Re: Gryphon Portrait: Posing
I might fiddle a bit, but putting the wings in perspective is such a pain that i'm not too eager to modify them. Maybe just a bit. I do agree they look a bit short.Drake General wrote:I see some problems with how I've always imagined a gryphon.
I think they're better, but possible still too short. gryphons had a large wingspan.Rex Umbrarum wrote: I don't think they are. They're folded over so they look shorter.
Not quite sure what you mean about the forelegs... they are attached to a pair of shoulders right in front of the wings, like with the drake portraits. I'll try to make the shading there less ambiguous.Drake General wrote:I still have problems with it here, the forelegs look like they're halfway down it's body. When I looked at an earlier image, it looks more like you attached it more human-like than a four-legged creature. When you started shading it, I couldn't tell what was the head, and what wasn't, until I looked at a image before. The coloring is good though, even if I've always thought of them a lighter color. I've also seen some pictures with them a lighter color, and have spotted bellies(?).Corvvs wrote:All body parts now present! And the wings should be in better perspective now.
Next up- a bit of anatomy work on his lower half, then feathers, scales, claws, etc.
If somebody disagrees with me, do so. It's been a while since I've done this sort of thing, and I'm definitely not a master.
Coloring is based on the sprite, but it is a bit dark. Maybe a lighter grey belly.
Thanks for the input.

No problem on the input part.
On the shoulders, the belly of a gryphon is protruding slightly out from the front legs. If you find a picture of a large cat, you could see how the belly works with the front legs. The wings should start from near the base of the neck.

Re: Gryphon Portrait: Shading
Alright here's an update. I hope the shading is in the right style...and i'll probably tweak the lines a bit later.

Wow, that is very nice (even though it does not match the colors of the mainline gryphon ).
I can't wait to see more progress.

Re: Gryphon Portrait: Shading
The head had looked a little odd earlier, but with the shading I see you have it under control. One thing I'd like to point out before you get the beak shaded is that the nose and corners of the mouth don't look quite right(the sprite is modeled after an eagle I think?):

The dark line under the beak, running along the chest, is a little odd, especially when combined with the what looks dangerously close to pillow shading of its right pectoral.
It is looking better, keep with it.

Thanks people.
@Espreon: I might lighten the gray a bit to make it match more. Thanks for pointing that out.
@Doofus: Good catch. It needs work.

Nicely done.
Besides what people have already mentioned, I don't really see anything.

I really don`t understand, why you did not take any refs, searching for dynamic pose...
These all are true dynamic or just interesting posing. Just use them as a base for your line-art.

That tutorial has some interesting bits... I'll look into it. I like the third ref a lot.

One critique on the wings:
While very dynamic, they have no structure to them at the moment. Real bird wings have bones and work in a specific way. Here's a good tutorial on how to position them:

But, you know, wings are tricky. ^^;
