Why not?

Actually, given that attack animations are mirrored depending on where the enemy is, all Wesnoth units are ambidextrous...

He's using a kite shield because when i drew it, i forgot that the sprite has a tower shield. I intend to fix that.

he's left handed because the stock i used for a (very heavy) reference is posed with the weapon in the left hand. I don't think this makes a lot of difference, for reasons mentioned by Irrev.

'nother go.

Shadowed out the face cos i got frustrated trying to draw a new one. Redrew the mace head and shield.

Hand angle where it's gripping the mace shaft makes the shaft look like it's bent. Other than that, I really think this is awesome. Perhaps you could pattern the mace shaft a little?

Leather wrapped around the bottom part? I was thinking something like that. And how would you suggest i fix the hand - i already made it a lot bigger, cos it looked really dinky (primarily, i think, because the one in the stock was unarmoured). Moving the thumb up the handle slightly would do it i think.

I also need to give the shield some thickness, part of which will be provided by shading, but some of which will have to come from being able to see some of the top edge.

If these two lines were parallel, that would solve my problem with it.

He's resting it on his shoulder. Personally i don't see anything wrong with it.

You guys are imagining problems where there are none, hold a baseball bat rest it on your shoulder then look in a big mirror. You'll see that 'your hand is at an unnatural angle'.

I agree that the hand is ok (though with the gauntlet on it could have been a bit larger, now it's the size of a naked hand), I'm more concerned with the angle of the lower arm. Now it makes the left upper arm (behind the body) seem too short.

Comparing to myself in the mirror, I would put the arm as below (the difference may not look like much, but when projected into the space behind the body, it has a lot of influence on the position of the elbow):

Oh, and by the way, the mace is again huge. There's a bit of artistic licence in the cartoony style, but that is about twice the size of real one-hand maces of that type.

No no no, THIS: http://padawanjenn.tripod.com/LotR/rotk ... g2_lrg.jpg
is huge. The mace in the portrait merely has a long handle (not cartoony).

I think it would help if about half of the mace peaks out from behind the helmet instead.

Other than that, it looks awesome!

I was thinking about bringing the head down the handle a bit. But i like the size atm - it's a little big, but it shows what it is. Better than the previous, at least.

Shading and minor edits. Forgot the shade the chainmail bits, but i don't think that's actually really needed.

EDIT: smeg, forgot to shrink it. UPdated.

Is it just me or does it look like the mace handle is thinner just below the spot that he holds it?

Other than that, awesome work!

It does a bit. It's also not shaded >.< And i've just realised the lighting direction on the shield is WAY off.

I'll finish it off tonight.
