No one can contest that statement.
That is not true.

The ring was evil and the ring was powerful, but given that it never used its true power, that is not what it symbolized. It was and acted as a corruptor, a thing that can do one no good but that one can not give up. Like....an addiction. That is what it symbolized.
but you agree that it *did* symbolize something...

Why do you say it symbolized something? In the middle-earth universe it WAS something. There is no need to invoke symbolism to understand the ring in the context of Middle-Earth. The fact that the ring was evil, powerful, and corrupting, does not mean that it symbolized those things.

Oh, and for the record, there are several examples of people giving up the ring. (Bilbo, Sam, Gandalf come to mind) Not that it was necesarrily easy mind you.

gandalf never had the ring. When did he give it up?
the only reason bilbo and sam were able to give it up was 1) they never used its full power and 2) they're hobbits. it says somewhere that hobbits are able to give it up, but on one else is.

Bilbo gave it away after lots of convincing from one of the most convincing people in the world, and he was a hobbit, as turin stated. Sam only had it for a little while, and he didn't give it back, Frodo snatched it back from him. Gandalf never had it.

Shouldn't this be in Off-topic? And anyway, I don't like Lord of the Rings in the first place.

I've already given up on discussing LOTR in off-topic. It doesn't work nearly as well.

I hope you reserve your judgment until you have read the books. My friend Lars, a severe fantasy geek, always hated LOTR, until he actually sat down with the dang things and read them after seeing the movies. Now, he loves it.

I saw the first two movies. I couldn't really follow them. Elvish Pillager, if turin survived being attacked by a Dwarvish Berserker 30 times http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic. ... &start=105 , than I can survive that.

the movies were different than the books... i advise you do what Jetryl said, and reserve judgement until you have read them...

the movies are easier to follow if you have already read the books
So I don't really know how clear they were...
Anyway, watching the movies is not the same as reading the books.

I understand. I'll consider it. I probably couldn't follow it because I did not remember the first one when I saw the second. But the battle scenes were good. But how did you survive the Dwarvish Berserker's 30 attacks?

I don't even know what this thread was about (I skipped to page 5) but I think Aragorn also gave the ring away.
