Wesmercial-0.8: This release is very different from the previous. In fact I may run this as a parallel line, but I'm not sure. Many new changes and it is longer and hopefully slower. Enjoy!

After "Explore New Lands", and the Dwarf slays that Drake Flameheart(?), it should say "Slay Strange Monsters"! 8)
It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.

May I ask what did you use to create those animated lightning bolts near the end? I might have some other uses for such a thing...

iMovie does stuff like that. Probably any movie maker software could do it or something similar.

This version was very nice. Just host it on youtube and we'll be ready to get slashdotted.

baby:
You hovered on the baby face in screen2 bit too long, then the transition effect into the next art screen3 was too fast. More transition time and less baby time, I think.

map:
map in the screen4 seems boring; needs to show movement markers progressing across it, then an X being placed.

font:
The gold font is too hard to see against the map background. It needs a black outline to make it more legible. (The font looks good on the last scene, though.)

bolt:
That subliminal lightning scene was quite jarring. I'm not sure how to fix, but at least let the sound effect finish fading out and give a smoother visual transition.

I like it much better than previous versions. Its good.
The only thing that bothers me is the explosion sound effect, it sound really bad and out of place :\ (especially since its volume is much higher than that of the music)

When you turn your computer off, its called a "Shut Down".
Shouldn't turning your computer on be called a "Shut Up"?

I like it. I did find some of the sound effects a bit odd - IMHO, it would work between with no sounds, just the music in the background.

Looks good. It's come a long way since the last time I looked at this thread.

Some observations:

* The initial "Battle for Wesnoth" Screen seems to be up a bit long
* The first map after the shot of the baby has a large black border around it.
* I agree with the others re: the sound effect.
* The colour of the font in "Explore new lands" makes it hard to read against the background. Ditto the later "Battle for Wesnoth" (albeit not as bad). Perhaps a transparent background box such as that used on the title screen would help?
* The actual in-game combat shots still look far too small compared to everything else. Probably double that size would be good.
* The fade between the "Battle for Wesnoth" map with the super-imposed graphic and the Elensefar battle is really pixelated. A different fade would be better.
* The lightning effect is cool, but it should originate offscreen. It looks wrong for it to just appear on top of the picture.

I know that's a lot of comments, but they're all final polish. The work you've done so far is awesome, and I'm looking forward to 1.0.

WOW!!!

I didn't watch this before, but this has lots, lots, lots, lots, LOTS of potential!! What you have so far is very good. I know you will add more, but I would like to suggest adding enough battle scenes to showcase all of the Default factions, and hopefully several different settings for combat (a watery battle, forest, the amazing multi-hex mountains, etc.). This would truly be a great thing to release to spread Wesnoth's popularity!!

I have one quick question as I have not browsed the rest of this thread: are you allowed to use the music? I think I recognize some of it as non-Wesnothian, though I am unsure if this could become an issue.

Yeah... In the Baby scene, for the first second there I thought I clicked the wrong link and went to Harry Potter trailer instead. But, Nice job! Though the "Explore new lands". "Battle for wesnoth" seem like a bit old style.

I cant stress enough the importance of the media to be in free codecs in a free container. The only decent free container is matroska, http://www.matroska.org, use that.

For codecs and standards you should use either theora (which might be best, really) or XviD. For audio use either Ogg Vorbis or FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec).

When it comes to translations, use subtitles for your text (not logoimages or the other texts, but the text you put in on your own, use subtitles for those) and then let translations add more languages to the subtitles.

That said and put aside, it's a nice work you've done, and the intro is of high quality. The battles should be more detailed, and less faction-centric in my opinion, and the flashing portaits could be slowed down, and show only the few best ones.

Your fade-effects seem weird and very color-distorting, simple fade-to/from-black would be good enough. (people have seen so much other visually stunning effects that these things suddenly feel smallish :)

My opinions, and opinions only.
Keep up the good work, it is indeed appreciated.

It might be nice to mention that Wesnoth is available in many languages; and maybe shortly display the title of game in different languages.

Here is the text file with a few translations. More translations can be found in PO files in source code, or extracted from installed MO files.

If it is not possible -- or would not look good -- to display all translations, I suggest preferably displaying the non-Latin ones; I think it makes a better impression, the more "international" feeling.

Sorry, it took me a bit to get to all of this. First, thanks. I am personally VERY pleased myself with this version so I am quite happy that others are too. Now addressing the ideas:

On sound effects:
I'll try it. I put the sound in there pretty much to add some difference, but I'll try without.
Sapient wrote:baby:

Makes sense. The baby does get a lot of time.
Sapient wrote: map:

Actually these are there. I do know that they are impossible to see though. I am going to work on that.
Sapient wrote: font:

Others have mentioned this, so I'll see what I can do.

yeah I know :( . I really want this to be fixed, but again my huge problem is lag and the fact that it still seems to pixelate and zoom stuff out when I put it in Adobe Premier Elements.

As for open source/containers:
I am working on that. I will certainly have this by 1.0. But it WILL be done.

Again thanks for the comments

hello there, i am a brazilian wesnoth player and i have got some suggestions that can make you feel happier :P

1st - WMV is the smaller format, 1 minute would have maximum 3 mbs. (nah, thats not very important:P )

2nd - HOW DIDNT ANYONE talk about FLASH??? Macromedia's flash is a lot used for online game comercials... And it would have really good results... If you want some refferance, take newgrounds for example, they do a lot of flash movies with the "sprites" (pixel gfx) and some of them would like to help you with the commercial... ask for help in their forum

c ya, bye bye
