Well they can be dangerous, but 90% aren't and how could you tell a elephant who to trample or crush, there would be all sorts of problems. I know you don't have morale etc in Wesnoth but in reality they are only useful against people who haven't seen them before. If your elephant gets scared the chances are it'll turn around and trample your troops. At least with a hippo its a 1 at a time thing.

Elephants can swim....

That is the reason why they are all over indonesia... they swam there. Seriously, they did! You could also just find some mythical beast and use that. A trireme might not be so bad an idea if it weren't so big.

But is an elephant is not obviously amphibious like a hippo is. You would recruit the elephant, then be like, "WTF, he can go in water? awesome!".

Why is a hippo worse than a mythical beast exactly? Hippos are really dangerous, and if you are going to allow a mythical beast then you might as well say that the hippo is psychically controlled by the rider.

Personally i would like a big hippocampus. No matter how material we may see Romans today, they did have mythology, and believed in it. And, AFAIK, the mythical Airiyan thingie is the main idea so far for them, right?.

Well hippos are really Dangerous, more people in Africa die from being killed by a hippo, than by being killed by a Lion... and they would be better than most other water creatures, since they do walk on land, but usually tire quickly, so it would have the same move stats as a merman

The legions hhad a thing for eagles right? Had a black one on a banner, got really angry when some jewish rebels captured this banner, cect....
anyway, why not use an eagle as a water unit? It's trainable, breedable, more practical then a hippo, and, it can cross water.

Hmm, giant eagles.

or maybe dragons (tamed) or a weaker version of them, they could be viewed as sacred in lavinian culture (like bulls in India), but trained to fight in battles for the empire (with riders)

seems a bit poposterous, but it would make the idea less like the Saracens falcon unit.

and it wasn't just eagles (although that was the main one) they had eagles (and other animals) on the top of their battle standards, and loosing one was considered shameful and unacceptable.

Er I wasn'tt suggesting giant eagles- I was suggesting, small, hard to hit, fast, village capturing, eye gouging eagles.
