How about "The Folly of Nationalism" :)

I was really struck and touched by the recent French film Joyeaux Noel. It wonderfully dramaticized the XMAS truce.

Realize, Yanshee, that getting a concensus on naming anything on this forum will not happen, so you should take the proposed names here as suggestions, not as part of a vote. You will need to make an executive decision at some point and just go with it.

Perhaps this thread could be reserved for the art of the Era, and the discussion on the name moved to Faction & Era contributions

You're right, I should have asked that in the Faction&Era forum, I didn't thought to do it there, sorry...

I think you're right too, there have been some good propositions, but my favourite one is still "Storm of Steel", so this will be the name of the era (unless someone has good arguments against it...). Thanks for all the propositions guys !

I also have 3 new units for Storm of Steel ( :P ) to show you:
- Tirailleur Senegalais: french colonial infantry troop
- the Charron: a french armored car
- Nieuport 17: a french fighter airplane, I still have to work a bit on this one, as I have problems doing the propeller, don't really know how I should represent it...
I will also try the units in game, because I'm not sure the Charron and the planes are not a bit too big for the game (but they're enclosed in a 72x72 square so they should work fine...)

[edit]Oh and btw: Joyeux Noel is a wonderful movie ! [/edit]

Hmm, does the propeller have to be represented at all? I mean, it's quite obvious that it's a plane, and it looks good without the propeller too.

Also, unless you manage to think up abilities to the utility units (byciclist and genie) I think they should be left out.

genie could have special abilities, but the cyclist unit was a fighter in WW1 IIRC, a light mobile fighter, but still mainly a fighter...

and btw, I'm waiting for the french "taxi" unit

Um... I dunno. Storm of Steel sounds corny IMHO. Like a Manowar album title. But hey, it's your era :)

You continue to impress me. Those units are lovely. WWI is not a historical epoch that normally interests me much, but I'm really looking forward to playing this.

I do agree it sounds like a Manowar album.

I would recommend adding WWI to whatever title you officially decide on. Such as WWI: Storm of Steel or Storm of Steel: WWI, WWI: The Western Front, or The Western Front:WWI. Mainly for the purpose of making it instantly recognizable as a World War I era.
Sorry for the meaningless post

I'm a bit late joining this, but never mind...
Normally I hate historical wargames, and I don't really have much interest in the last thousand years of history either. But this is such a great idea!

I love the sprites (in fact, I actually prefer them to the standard Wesnoth 'cartoons'), I really like the toy-soldier feel that they have. This might make me sound really dumb, but I've never even heard of vector animation, but seeing this makes me want to look it up!

I don't know about the propeller, it's true that's it's obviously a plane, but I really think it's lacking something on the nose, It looks a bit like the nose of an old Mig15 actually: http://www.globalaircraft.org/photos/pl ... g-15_1.jpg, but maybe it's just me, it's not always easy to be objective about the things you do... :? That's where comments helps me a lot ! Anyway, I think I'll leave it like that for now, until I think of some way to draw the propeller.... As for the units, you're right for the genie and I don't plan to include him soon, I was just giving a first try at the graphic... And for the bicycle unit, as Boucman stated, bycicle units were simply fighter units on bicycle. About the taxi unit, I didn't plan to do a taxi unit, as it would only serve as transportation of foot units, and I don't know if it's possible make units being transported by other units, if it is, I may add it in the future...

Now, for the name of the era, arghh, you guys are throwing so much hesitation in my head now, as some people seems to think "storm a steel" is not a so good name. But let's continue this discussion in the era forum, in this post:  http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14046, I have some other propositions which I'd like to have your opinions. Btw adding WW1 to the name seems fine to me for not so explicit names (like storm of steel), but I think it depends on the final name...

Anyway thanks a lot for the encouragements, it really motivates me to work hard on this (and it's a hard work, as it's also my first time creating anything for Wesnoth... ) !

In theory you can do this, but the coding would be a nightmare. I can do quite a lot of weird things with WML, but I wouldn't know where to start on this. I do know that it's possible - if you want to do it, I'd suggest that you ask Zookeeper how to make it work (since he seems to know everything about WML!)

New units:
- Canon de 75: french artillery
- Caudron: a Bomber
- Cuirassier: French early war cavalry
- Dragon: French cavalry
- Spad XIII: fighter airplane

I'm really happy with the Spad, seeing the Nieuport and the Caudron beside him makes me really want to redo them, but I'll do that later, as this is only the first graphics of the era. I'm also wondering if I should add a man with the artillery, or just leave the canon alone... :?
As always, tell me what you think !
