The new jav is a lot better. Although now that a version's been committed I would like to say how much I liked the older green leather version, even though it didn't look like leather.

But in an attempt to work out why the green leather didn't work, (yeah, mostly for my own interest) I'm starting a thread in art workshop in which I try to produce some credible raytraced leather. I'd be grateful for comments if anyone else is interested. After all, really knowing what makes leather actually look leathery might be useful for other portraits.

Simons: I will be sure to follow that thread with great interested, for leather is a tough challenge to me

The woodsman won't be long now. In the meantime, here's a preliminary bowman with flats (note that despite the colour, he'll be wearing a mail headpiece under his cap)

New version of the woodsman, which should adress most concerns :
- Flat chest / forward shoulders toned down
- Bow oughtn't be confused anymore with a recurve bow
- Different shading of his right arm corrects its angle
- Adam's apple is back! 8)
- Fiddled with the face

i simply love the woodman's raw and hairy hands! there is still something strange about they eyes (i think the pupils are slightly differently sized) and you get a rather extreme expression everytime you show the white of the eye above (or below) the pupil, if you want him to be really appalled, that's great. other than that he's just perfect :)

and i can't wait to see the bowman shaded!

I think there positioned differently... They seem the same size, though.

imho something seems wrong/strange with HIS right arm/wrist.

The lower arm is awfully short. There should be no foreshortening to speak of in that position.

:augh:

He does seem to be right though. Probably just an artifact from changing the shading but leaving the size/shape.

There's definitely something wrong with that arm. Be it the length of the forearm, or the sheer size of the hand that doesn't fit the rest of the arm, I'll see how I may correct it.
I'll also have a go at his eyes.

Almost done with the bowman's shading.
Final woodsman ought to be available tomorrow.

By "almost done" I presume you mean the final shading on the fabric is yet to be implemented. Because the rest of the shading on the Bowman is pretty-much perfect.

I like the fabric on the Woodsman, by the way - it looks like rough canvas, which is exactly what peasant types often wore, and with the fixes to the "flat chest" issue the way the fabric drapes has become very convincing as well.

Your talent for drawing various pieces of armor never will cease to amaze me!
I particularly like that chainmail. Something does seem slightly off about the hand, though. It's not clear if those are hairs or wrinkles on the back of the hand, and the fingers seem somehow too far from the bowstring due to a perspective issue possibly.

I see this as well, and I cannot decide if it's because the fingers are too far away, or if the issue is compounded by the fact that the string appears to go into the body instead of past it? Just my observation.

Regards the bowman, I can't see the bow string below the hand at all. Great work all throughout though.

EDIT: I've just realised (from re-reading Turuk and Sapient's posts) that the bow isn't held completely in front of the bowman but is actually to the side, in which case that part with the bow string and the fingers does seem odd. Turuk and Sapient put it better I think.
