Re: Age of Dinosaurs!
Okie dokie, after much MORE consideration and thought, I realized there isn't enough distinction within the dinosaurs to make four factions based on them. They would all look the same. As I am done with IAF I can direct the little Wesnoth time I have toward this. So, I have decided to go back down to two factions, "carnivores" and "herbivores" (placeholder names). I have a list of the units in both factions which I will post here when I get more time. Hulavuta, you're still on the co-developer list if you want to come back and help.
Have a great day all, I'm looking forward to getting back into this.
Wishing you all the best,
Mountain_King
EDIT: Here's the list.
Carnivores:
Plesiosaur line. A good water-control unit that has several strikes. Might be removed later.
Big croc line. Extinct crocodiles, decent water/swamp control. With a special surprise for level three!
Raptors. Pretty basic. Does blade damage and has skirmisher. I'll probably use the saurians as placeholders for their graphics.
Baryonyx. Not sure why, I've just always liked this dinosaur. I'm trying to expand my imagination on this one, so he's going to be part of an "archer" line.
T-Rex. This one was too cool not too have. Its advancement line goes all the way to level five, at which point it has nightstalk.
Pterosaurs: The familiar flying reptiles, I decided to make them something like mages. How? You'll see.
Ornithomimid. This should help bring down the average dino size in the faction. Basically simple fighters.
Herbivores:
Sauropods. A bit like a wose or a troll with impact and regeneration. Gains a ranged attack at level 4.
Archelon. Water control unit that might get scrapped later, but is staying for now because I already have art for it.
Nothosaur. Not really an herbivore, but this faction needs them. Their movement type is very naga-like.
Ceratopsians. Charge and pierce, just like a horseman. Two advancements paths as well.
Stegosaurs: Something like spearmen/pikemen in damage.
Ankylosaurs: Think like heavy infantrymen. Will most likely use that crasher art from Nightmares of Meloen for now.
Duckbilled dinos: They have leadership.
The era is going to contain high unit costs to offset their high hitpoints.
So...what do ya think?

AGE OF DINOSAURS IS HERE!!!!!!!
In a moment of weakness, I went and uploaded it to the server. It is unit-complete, but not stat complete in any way. The map packaged with it is mostly there to show off the new terrain. Have fun!
Best Regards,

EDIT: Please post any feedback you have here. I need to know if there are any problems.

Re: Age of Dinosaurs (It's finally here!)
Woah, that's quite a list. Two questions:
1. Are you saying an entire era just on a single layer?!? (i.e., Jurassic?) That's a lot of work, not to mention repetitive.
2. Have you actually seen the released version of the era? It contains many different dinosaur types which I'm sure you are aware of-- they're mostly on this list.
Now, another thing:
For quite a while, I considered making factions based on each portion of the Mesozoic: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. However, I came to a very firm conclusion on this before releasing. This era cannot divide itself up by layers. One of the reasons for that is because I realized that, layer divisions aside, there are only about 50 really distinct kinds of dinosaurs. This means that much of the same art would be reused. Ad Nauseum. I really don't want to go to the work of coding a hundred units of which half will be using doubled-up art.
So, there IS a method to my madness. Thank you for your suggestions. Do you have any other helpful suggestions about AoD?
Best Regards,
Mountain_King
EDIT: While I was thinking about it, I uploaded version 0.3.0 to the addon server. This version adds one "easter egg" in the most literal sense, and also updates some other minor things.

Re: Age of Dinosaurs (It's finally here!)
As a suggestion (like my previous post) you could (if you really wish to) add a special ability for aquatic units saying that they loose some health in deep water, as they used non-aquatic breathing systems in water. (As a suggestion, maybe a heals in shallow water to go with it?) ;D

Re: Age of Dinosaurs (It's finally here!)
Released version 0.3.1 on the server, using a new scaled down version of the fire dragon icon (it apparently causes bugs with the engine). I don't know if there are any other changes, because it's been so long since I've made any changes.

Is the addon on the 1.8 server, and if so, what is it named?

Um, no.... .... .... .... *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *typetypetypetypetype* *cick*
Um, yes. Yes it is.
Two things:
I just uploaded it as-is, meaning there could very well be some bugs due to in-dated(?) code. I don't think I used any 1.9 specific coding, but it's possible.
The map that comes with it is mainly meant just to showcase the new terrains. It was made in five minutes. Would anyone be willing to design a better companion map for the era?
Also, I'd very much like to hear some feedback. It's been kind of dry since the initial hype died out late last year.

Getting this error message when I downloaded the addon and tried to login to local player:

I haven't verified, but if you took that line from 1.9's iron mauler, maybe some file path or something changed since 1.8 (since Alaskan's error clearly stipulates it's on 1.

Can't find anything relevant that changed in between 1.8 and 1.9. My brother ran wmllint on it and said there was a double space somewhere, and he fixed it. I've uploaded the new version, does the bug still persist?

Re: Age of Dinosaurs (It's finally here!)
... Okay, Alaskan, here's what I'll need you to do:
First, reproduce the error message in-game by trying to open the era. Next, go to the core Wesnoth folder and pull out the stderr.txt file. Post it here. Then, remove the Ankylo_3 file from the era and run again. If a different error shows up, attach the whole stderr to go with the first. I can look over them and maybe pinpoint exactly what's wrong.
You DO know your way around the Wesnoth folders, right?
Mountain_King is out.
PE-ACE!

no other errors occurred after removing the Ankylo 3 file.
