They are just that, usually - knights, of the lance-and-charger variety. Those tales are usually a knight rescuing a damsel in distress from a marauding dragon - perhaps the most famous is that of St George (although that one has no damsel...). They have nothing to do with Dragoons, who came MUCH later, after the invention of man-portable gunpowder weapons, from which they got their name.

I know this topic is a little dated but I can't help be reminded of the Ogre Battle series.
They had a really hard to obtain unit who wielded a sword and fought on foot. His armor was 'Dragon Armor' and he was EXTREMELY good at fighting ANY dragon because his armor basically nullified any elemental attack, plus high defense. Overall the unit was amazing.
I like the idea for a campaign and all, one about monster hunting, but I do agree, the monsters aren't frequent enough. Bubu, do you have any images in mind to use? I would like to see something like this and would definitely take a whack at the coding if you have the images.

What would you give for your freedom?
- In the game there are many monster like:
Yeti, Giant Spider, MudCrawler, Giant Scorpion, Wolf(?), Griphon, Sea Serpent, Cutle fish, Ogre(?), Wose(?).
- And drakes are a "Kind of Dragon".
I couldnt take the image of the dragoon of the Ogre battle because i lost my save file, but i take this picture from tatic of ogres, that isnt very good but it is possible to know a little about it.
Sorry, I am not good at drawing.

And in my world, Dragoons are the warriors that kill the little black bunnies with purple mohawks, who weild uzis, have red eyes, and can eat an entire human in just under four seconds.
Seriously, have we detached from the point here yet?
We seem just to be talking about the different games use of the name dragoon.

This is not even trying to be a faction.
